NYCD...Big disappointment :-(

Hi Guys!

I'm gonna speak about my experience with NYCD's Soma...which unfortunately was a big disappointment in the end (I'll explain why...) :-(
This could maybe give a few infos to people interrested in this strain but still irresolute.

Why did I choose the NYCD ? --> THE RED GRAPEFRUITS/FRUITY TASTE.

I bought a pack of 10 regular seeds early 2012, My goal was to make a selection in order to find a keeper (red grapefruit taste)
Germination was 100%. got 8 girls out of 10 seeds....so, very happy until here.

The plants were very vigorous, I pruned them all in order to get multi-branch plants..they reacted very well.
I noticed 3 different phenos:
1/ sativa pheno: big strecht (X5, X6) big colas but very fluffy/airy buds.
2/ indica pheno: stretch X3, smaller/squat, more dense buds, (got coloured leaf on those).
3/ Hybrid sativa/indica pheno: mix of both.

they vegetated during 4 weeks, but I think 2 weeks would have been sufficient...during the 12/12 passage, they grow for 4 weeks before the first flowers appear. so don't stop the "N growing stage fertilizer" too early during this stage...or you'll maybe get "N" deficiency.

the fowering time was between 12 and 14 weeks.

As I explained I choose the NYCD for its taste only...doesn't matter on the yeld, flowering time or potency.
And that's the main reason of my disappointment.
Most of the different phenos got this "not so good" lemon/pepper taste...weird taste, not really "fruity"
I got only one plant which always had the lemon/pepper taste but with a bit more fruity undertones. (It need to be in jar 2/3 weeks AT LEAST). It was the best smoke, but nothing incredible...no grapefruit taste at all...even with more time in jar.

As I didn't get "THE TASTE", it left the yeld and the potency...let's speak about that:
It's not so powerful, the High is Ok...but nothing incredible. Of course, this is not a body stone effect as it's more sativa than indica. I can appreciate from time to time, because I'm still able to work or doing something, or you can smoke it on the morning...which is not possible with my AK47's mother plant for example :-)
About the yeld: it can make big buds, but as most of them are fluffy/airy they weight light. It's not a huge yelder, but it's not bad at all!

So in the end, I won't keep any of the cuts I made. No keeper for me.
In MY opinion/experience , It's a too long flowering time strain which gave me a mid quality smoke.
+ I was very surprised to find a few seeds in the buds (didn' see any male banana, there probably were a few small male flowers)...It was not so many, but it seems there were some hermies problems.

I was maybe expecting too much on this strain, and maybe not lucky with this pack...
I read on ICMAG that SOMA lost the mother plant of the NYCD and replace it by another plant. (unfortunately, when I knew this...it was too late.).
So it seems that the "new NYCD" is nothing equal compared to the "real old one".
If this is true, I think it's not really honest from SOMA to still sell those (expensive) seeds under the name of "New York City Diesel".
Or at least, he could change the description text which speak about the red grapefruit taste on his website.

Even if I'm a bit disappointed with my first experience with soma's seed...I'm fair and I think I'm gonna try his "SO GOUDA" and maybe the "SOMANGO". let's give it a chance, we'll see...

:-)

Cheers!

hallo. I understand you completely... same path for me... for disappointment....
but all the time I go to amsterdam I,m still amazed by this wonderful taste and smell...
i spent few years seaching for that pheno.
till now I sprouted more than 70 original seeds and 25 S1 and more than 50 f2s to find it... this is the sad news. only one had this, and I'm so happy to have found it, but what a journey...
take a look at my thread,if you like.

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=206616
I think i got all the phenos available, from fruity, to flowery, to spicey, to fuel/diesel.
it's a great variety, bur very, very unstable.
it's a variety that needs cure. grapefruit comes out more with time.
I agree that the original mother is lost and most of these seeds are just a remake, poor for most.
but there are some gems hidden. but they're too expensive anyway... you may get more keepers from server fund IMO.
same things about sogouda and somango. difficult to find the right pheno. but don't give up, if you find it you'll love it forever...
peace
Dr.P

Hi Dr.Penthotal,

wow, I took a look at your link...this is indeed a crazy quest guy!!! I'm happy for you, you finally got it, as for me I won't follow the same path...too expensive, too much time for something not sure at all.

You said that is the same thing with SO GOUDA/SOMANGO ??? does it means soma lost those mother plants too ?
Can you please give me more info on this ? you experience with those strains...
I'm a bit afraid now :-)

thanks!

Hi,

yeah i purchased a pack of soama,s nycd and rockbud in 2007 from gypsy in original packs, same story 3 different looking pheno's in the nycd 2 in the socalled rockbud both turned out
nothing like the pics or rave even had a few hermies actually for the cost (quite pricey at the time) i considered them to be total shit and a waste of money and time.then again i have never trusted or liked any non rasta jamacians with dreadlocks so how stupid was i to give my money away to one.hope old bob marley rises from the grave and scalps the dreads from his skull and thats being nice.

Many of the most desirable expressions seem to be around 5% of the population from the breeders pack , Blueberry is similar for sure and TH has stated that Deep Chunk is 5%.

Given a 50/50 sex split you need four packs , more if they dont all pop , to have a decent chance of finding one , its down to luck , probability and money.

F2,s or S1,s you make may have a lower incidence but are cheap enouth to run in quantity over time , and the stunner usually turns up within a hundred , or two.

dont buy soma seeds, too much problems between the high prices, the heterogeneity his strains, the seeds who dont germinate, the lies about the lineage.... oh yes he's a cool man....
