Casey Jones F3 hermie issue???
I got a 10 pack of these for free, popped all 10 and got 4 females who are between day 20-30 of flower. I was doing some routine work this evening and found that two of my HOL Casey Jones girls have male pollen sacks waiting to open. One of these girls even had a small male flower that had opened already but luckily it looked to be low enough on the plant and out of the way of the air movement in the room.
I'll post pics tomorrow but this situation is very disappointing as I had the chance to germ superior genetics to this stuff when a member on this board encouraged me to germ these HOL beans instead. I guess I should've gone with my gut .

Interested in temps and light.
My casey will throw a nanner or three at week 8+ but they are all sterile... Never seen them at 20-30 days in unless there was a real light leak or heat issue. Normally on the buds closest to the canopy. In H3ads forum, there is a sticky about casey jones and her sensitivity. Hopefully it's an environmental issue, you can pluck a few nanners and keep that grow growing, but I've never grown the casey F3s.... Good vibes brother |

I'd be ok with nanners, these are testicles and I've seen 3 on two plants. My temps are constant, never higher than 29C and around 23C at night. All my girls are under 600's and no one else throws balls and I germ all kinds of my own pollen-chucked beans. I recently grew out some Jamaican bagseed and of course those are the ones you pay attention to (no Jamaican's hermied on me).
Three of my four girls look like this, stretchy and sparsely populated with flowers. This growth structure is the 'pheno' that's giving me hermie issues. The remaining lady looks a little more like what I'm seeing in CJ journals. No issues with her ATM. |

Your problem pheno looks straight up sativa... Closely related to the oriental express on the thai side I bet... Gonna be a bit finicky with those genes, I would pull the pods and see if any more pop up before trashing her... Sorry man.
I'll let festi and red chime in, but in the meantime, I'll just say... nuts! Definitely ain't no single nanner, but I have seen them pop up only on the lowers... Might get lucky still :( Last edited by LouDog420; 06-01-2012 at 06:31 PM.. |

Yeah, I'm definitely ok with some sativa-leaning traits coming through, I just wasn't happy about the balls. I killed the clones and will pull off balls as needed, I was just a little surprised to see them. Despite the structural difference in flower, all 10 plants looked like clones of one another while in veg which tells me some effort when into the background of this strain.

Hey homebrewer, sorry to hear about the mixed flowers. These came from f2's that a much beloved fellow ICM'er gave out as freebies. He assured me the cross was stress tested with no intersex issues, but I did get a few male flowers the last time I flowered it out- I originally blamed the beans, only to discover one of the back seams had split on my tent.
I'm reluctant to brush this off as operator error (as the go-to response used by many), but have you checked for light leaks recently? I have gotten reports of individual braches of HOL's Casey's Dream throwing balls, which has the cj as a parental. Damn recessive genes lol! A sativa-leaning pheno that takes after the thai side of the cross will have higher odds to express the thai's recessive/natural tendency to herm. Unless the girls go full on hermie, it will be worth your while to pic sacks off as they appear and wait it out. I haven't had a sativa pheno, but if it's anything close to the original thai you're in for something special. But if it threatens to seed the entire grow then I would chop it!

We've been led to believe that lots of variation in a cross is a good thing, because some vendors would rather you buy several packs of their gear, instead of them actually doing the selections to fix that nag champa or golden clit trait themselves. For hobby growers, pheno hunting is fun. But mono-croppers who grow to pay the bills prefer a consistent product that regularly delivers the desired trait package. |

Well these are getting close to done and I wanted to post pictures of how they finally turned out.
This one smells like sour, rotting fruit, sort of similar to a durian for those of you that have been to thailand. Robust and sturdy with rock-hard flowers. I'm not a huge indica fan so hopefully this one has some pep in her buzz. No male flowers on this one: This one had a male flower or two and is now throwing nanners. She has a nice balance of skunk, fruit and Earth in her aroma and she looks like she'll yield really well compared to the other phenos. She's sitting in about 3 gallons of promix and stands over 5 feet tall, she's going to be a super easy chop! This is one sloppy broad whose buds caused her to need tied up early on in flowering. I've never grown trainwreck but from the descriptions I've heard of sloppy plants who are falling all over themselves under the weight of the buds, that accurately describes this pheno. She had one male flower that I caught early so no harm done. She has some time left but as of now, her aroma is skunky. There was one more pheno whom isn't really worth mentioning. Her aroma is very earthy, her yield is poor and she threw more male flowers than any of the other girls did. Her clone was killed. Overall, I'm excited to smoke these girls and am on the fence as to whether I'll keep the clones or not. I'm not into managing plants that throw male flowers unless the smoke is spectacular but we'll see soon enough. Kudos HOL on the durian-scented plant, very unique! |

Awesome shots bro!
Glad to hear they ended up working out! Casey is a beautiful plant Like I said, I had a casey very sativa pheno that would throw a few full out male flowers on the lower nodes, and be fine after that. Huge yielder though. I've also had a keeper pheno, floppy as all hell, smell is sweet fuel and she would throw nanners late when exposed to leaks or high temps, but they were always sterile. Nice energetic high too Let us know how they smoke mang!! |

Glad you stuck it out brother! It's sooo tempting to just say fuck it and chop girls that throw balls. I'm curious to see your final smoke report and comments, and whether you think it was worth it in the end.
We gave lots of these freebies out a couple of years ago, but this is the first thread to document a herm issue. What really blows my mind is how consistant this strain is, yet seems to throw a number of interesting phenotypes! Casey Jones is my favorite old school cross hands down.

I'll post a smoke report in the future (and some nug shots) as I usually don't dig into my product until about 4 weeks after the chop (1 week to dry, 3 weeks to cure). Two of the phenos will definitely live on for at least one more round, the 'trainwreck' pheno clone will probably get chopped. Just based on yield and aroma, it was definitely worth keeping an eye on them. |
