Canopy temps when using LED's
I remember somewhere, I think in one of the now defunct LEDGirl threads, that she recommended running higher than normal temps under LED lights. I know she doesn't have her forums anymore and that many on here do not particularly care for her, but has anyone noticed running higher temps (80-85) with these type of lights being beneficial? I ran a 400 watt HPS for years and about a year ago decided to try out the Lumigrow ES330. I always kept my temps around 73-78 with the HPS, but after a few runs with the Lumigrow, I am noticing better growth when temps are higher. Obviously, if that is what works, I'm gonna keep doing it, but is there any reason why this may be?

I've never understood how temperatures in the mid-70's could possibly be the ideal for cannabis - virtually anyplace where outdoor plants do very well, the temperatures are substantially higher than that. I've observed the same thing as you with my PL-L fixture, my ES330, and my hybrid fixture. OldMac, whose been growing a hell of a lot longer than anybody I know of, said that the ideal temperature is actually 82-85, which makes more sense to me. Perhaps the idea came about from trying to compensate for the IR thrown by HIDs, but it sure doesn't seem to apply to the "cooler" forms of lighting.

rives, I think you are right about compensating for HID IR light. Those things are very intense. I think 80-85 is probably optimal, although I don't see any decrease in growth with 75-78. When growing with LEDs, the problem is the opposite, the challenge is to get the temps high enough...

I always ran the HID budroom at 85 F. It had 3600 watts of mixed discharge lights and 17 fans were employed for heat and air management.
The HID was replaced by 2240 watts of LED and the temps dropped to 73 F. Way too low. Venting was redesigned with only nine fans (not counting the six per unit in the LED's) and the temps brought back up to 85 F. This works well with the strain grown, experience is limited with store bought seeds. The sidelights in the picture are not a factor as they are present in every room, even for clones. Cooling is separate from the overheads'. |
