After a tour of duty in Vietnam, US ARMY Infantry, combat medic, I returned to a US I didn't fit in.
I was discharged from Ft Lewis Wa in 1970. I had inherated enough money from my grandparents to buy 40 acres of forest land in Washngton state, right along the Canadian border.
My wife & I spent 3 years building&living in, this log cabin in the wilderness. From the cabin you could walk 20 miles into Canada, before you came to a road.
5 miles of 4 wheel drive road to get there. All logs came from the land.
No electricity, we built everything buy hand, done with rigging & block&tackle (you can see it n the pictures) I did use a gasoline chainsaw.
These pictures were taken 1970-73.

A couple more pictures

The center ridge pole was 18" thick & over 40ft long & probably weighed 1000lbs. I had a picker factor of +10 when we got it off the ground!

That's pretty sweet. It reminds me of a little of "Alone in the Wilderness."

We moved into the cabin after the first winter. Stayed 2 more years. My wife wanted to go to nursing school, so we moved to Seattle & I got a job at Boeing.
It was a hard life out there. My wife didn't appreciate the solitude as much as I

We lived off the grid. Raised our own food, chickens, pigs, garden.
There was a creek about a mile behind the cabin with rainbow trout like this
