Modulation of Hippocampal plasticity
All ICMAG and moderators,
I am sorry, but I have to submit this article in this particular forum. People that deal with blueberries have a right to know this. (This article, in the full-version, makes the concluding statement that, if you eat a ½ cup of fresh blueberries for four days in a row…you will fully enjoy the same mental results. In this study, Older rats were traveling through mazes faster and more effectively than than younger rats in the control group. Ahh….blueberries,….you either swallow them or, you don’t. ) Modulation of Hippocampal Plasticity and Cognitive Behavior by Short-Term Blueberry Supplementation in Aged Rats Citation: Casadesus, G., Shukitt Hale, B., Stellwagen, H.M., Zhu, X., Lee, H., Smith, M.A., Joseph, J.A. 2004. Modulation of Hippocampal Plasticity and Cognitive Behavior by Short-Term Blueberry Supplementation in Aged Rats. Nutritional Neuroscience, Volume 7 Number 5/6 (October/december 2004), PP.309-316 Interpretive Summary: It used to be thought that shortly after we are born that we had all of neurons that we were going to have throughout life and that no more new ones would be made. Now we know that during normal aging no neurons are lost and new ones are still being made (called neurogenesis) even into old age. However, it appears that the rate slows down. One brain region where this occurs is called the hippocampus, which is a major memory control area. In fact previous research has associated reductions in the rate of hippocampal neurogenesis during aging with declines in memory and cognitive processing, indicating a possible causal relationship. Indeed, a growth factor called insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1) may activate signals such as extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK) which controls neurogenesis and ultimately learning and memory processes. Previously, we showed that age-related declines in memory tasks can be improved by antioxidant-rich diets containing blueberries. In this study, to begin to understand the mechanisms responsible for the beneficial effects of blueberries, we assessed changes in hippocampal neurogenesis, activation of IGF-1, and ERK levels in blueberry-supplemented aged animals. The results showed that all of these measurements showed increases in the blueberry-supplemented as compared to control. Importantly, the results showed that these increases were significantly correlated with improvements in spatial memory. Therefore, cognitive improvements afforded by fruits such as blueberries, which are abundant in compounds called polyphenolics, may be regulated by their beneficial effects on hippocampal neurogenesis. Technical Abstract: During aging, reductions in hippocampal neurogenesis are associated with memory decline indicating a causal relationship. Indeed, insulin-like growth factor-1, a major activator of the extracellular receptor kinase pathway that is central in learning and memory processes, is also a key modulator of hippocampal neurogenesis. Previously, we showed that age-related declines in spatial memory tasks can be improved by antioxidant-rich diets containing blueberries. In this study, to begin to understand the mechanisms responsible for the beneficial effects of blueberries, we assessed changes in hippocampal plasticity parameters such as hippocampal neurogenesis, extracellular receptor kinase activation, and insulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor levels in blueberry-supplemented aged animals. Our results show that all these parameters of hippocampal neuronal plasticity are increased in supplemented animals and aspects such as proliferation, extracellular receptor kinase activation and insulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor levels correlate with improvements in spatial memory. Therefore, cognitive improvements afforded by polyphenolic-rich fruits such as blueberries appear, in part, to be mediated by their effects on hippocampal plasticity. |

Maybe, just perhaps,.........
I'm submitting this to particular people so that the have a healthy brain that remembers where they put their Flo clones and to keep better track of the numbering of their Blueberry containers. |

not the best piece of scientific writing, but this stoner after reading it a couple times understood it
![]() Polyphenolics are flavionoids, compounds from the plant kingdom with numerous antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral properties (a flavionoid from green tea is one of the most potent ones) Some of them are plant pigments. it seems that blunerry is a hot topic: Anthocyanins in aged blueberry-fed rats are found centrally and may enhance memory. i have have a handful of blueberries in a smoothie near everyday.,,
I dont know where i learnt it but blueberries have an anti-oxidant in their skin that makes u live longer period, longer then u would have if u didnt have them in ur diet..and this anti-oxidant isnt found in anything else on earth Like i said i cant remember where i got this info, its something that has always stayed with me. |

Anthocyanins have been discovered to be the central thing responsible for good heart health in the Native New Zealanders as well as in many of the red wine regions of the world...France, Germany, Italy etc...
The Australian CSIRO has been researching this a few years now...their website might have more info for you. muA |

....eat lots of berries...lots of nuts....drink vinegar (organic apple vinegar with the mother in it....Braggs)..... spoonfuls of black strap molasses...flush the system constantly.....berries are awesome stuff....love them...eat them all day long when I can....grow them on the property.....not 'til ya cry...train 'til ya die................health is everything....and it takes effort.

...Nuthin' wrong with local honey....I should mention that I don't drink bottles of vinegar....just cap fulls in my water....my thought process has been that since the humanoid is made up of mostly water....and ....livin' things require different PHs in their water...well obviously we should know that findin' our proper body PH is key....Mr. A can probably tell us much....but I'm a firm believer in keepin' the body flushed with good water....I really believe it keeps disease at bay.....
I also believe ya must rotate yer intake of things....so use vinegar fer a yr...then take a break off it fer 1/2 a yr.....I do the same with everything. The modern diet...is like indoor growin'...processed and artifical to a degree....we don't have to hunt or hide any longer...this far in our evolution...we just consume...so our bodies grow soft without the need to keep tham hardened....gotta take it upon ourselves to stay in the hunt...stay active. Stop eattin' shit...that's where disease comes from....cancer...diabetes.... sorry fer the ramble...somewhat off subject...but somethin' we all should be interested in...health....all ya really have to lose. |
