Insulation Hazards

Hey, I am building a room and the guy at home depot said I would use 2'' 4 by 8 R10 Foamular insulation instead of fiberglass or other types of insulation. This was recommended as it is water and mold resistant and I wanted to find an easier way than to vapor barrier the entire room.

I was wondering if this Foamular that can be found at https://www.menards.com/main/building.../p-1384827.htm is better than other types of insulation for fires and noise?? (vortex fans)

thanks

Most foam based rigid insulation is extremely flammable, and generally it does a poor job of sound isolation as well. (It can actually seem to amplify sounds.)

Unfaced fiberglass batts with 6 mil vapor barrier applied over it would be good, but will do little for fire or mold/mildew prevention.

I'd suggest using Roxul batt insulation. It is made from mineral wool as opposed to fiberglass and is superior in just about every way. Mineral wool is used in the "firestopping" trade because it will not burn and will keep fire from spreading, and perhaps more importantly for our application it contains a mildicide to prevent mold and mildew from growing. For 2x4 framed walls a minimum of R14 should be used, for 2x6 I suggest R22 (or R20 at a minimum).

Cover the exterior walls with 6mil vapor barrier and caulk the poly to the top and bottom plates, as well as the sides using acoustical sealant.

Also, don't forget insulate and vapor barrier your joist ends, and be sure the poly from the joist ends ties in with your wall poly.

Where is this room located? Garage, basement, attic or another room.
