light distance
i have a 400w HPS right now and its pretty close to the plants like 4 inchem as opposd to the recommended 12 inches and there are no signs of stress or burning so i was wondering if this can be harmful to the plant in any way, or if its ok to put the light as close as u can as long as theres no signs of burning

It's only bad if you notice bad effects. If you can keep it that close with no damage, then that's a great thing.

i heard too much light intensity will impair growth but i dont know if thats true for mature flwoering plants

As long as the plant tops are't burning and the temps near the plant tops isno more than 80F you should be fine.
