Townes Van Zandt!!!
I have seen a lot of threads about different musicians on this site, but can't find one about TVZ. I am not a huge country fan, but man! I am a big fan of excellent songwriting. My favorites are Dylan, Lennon-McCartney, Maynard from Tool, Leonard Cohen... and TOWNES VAN ZANDT!! I think this guy is VERY underrated and think it's a tragedy that not a lot of people know who he was. Everyone has heard 'Pancho and Lefty' but most seem to think Willie Nelson wrote it. So, does anyone else love Townes around here? Everyone I ask doesn't know who he is. If you've never heard of him, check out some of his songs. Some of my favorites are; Waiting Around to Die, Sake of the Song, St. John the Gambler, If I Needed You, Our Mother the Mountain, etc. If you are thinking "no way, I hate country music" check it out anyways! It's not like Garth Brooks or any of that fake shit, this is real "outlaw country".

Also, the song "Rake", and his cover of "Dead Flowers".

Agree 100%.
Here's one of my favorite clips from the PBS series "Austin Pickers" where he describes writing "If I Needed You". He was an incredible person. RIP Townes Van Zandt-If I Needed You from Austin Pickers 1984 |

TVZ was beyond an incredible talent. One of the few I listen to that can really evoke very strong feelings in me.

I know what you mean KSP! Most music I can listen to with friends, but Townes I generally only listen to alone because his words and the emotion behind them just tends to make me cry! He was just SO REAL! He put every bit of his pain into his music, held back nothing, nothing polished. And you can feel that pain very much, and it's very real.
