Bulbs like these paperwhites (daffodils) are being force grown for flowers in stones or gravel with no nutes or soil fauna in this article , the only thing the plant needs from the supporting media is water as it contains sufficient resources stored within the bulb.
The water stress theory sounds reasonable , roots are damaged by ethanol causeing wilting stress which brings on earlier , but smaller , flowers. Have always just cut off a portion of the roots to achieve the same result if running late. In soil with canna , bacteria will probably use ethanol as a carbon source very fast , no idea of the level at which root damage ocurrs but it could be quite low , media dependant. To be honest , i dont see any mechanism here that would be of benefit to canna , would be better to spray the alcohol on the leaves as in methanol chunking , better still drink it yourself. |

Are the roots damaged? The article mentions keeping them "thirsty".
" i dont see any mechanism here that would be of benefit to canna" Stressing plants with the only effect being reducing the stretch sounds nice to me. I think destroying the roots would retard the plant more. I will read up a bit more. |

Hi 3dDream , maybe a reduction of the plant roots capacity to absorb water above a certain level of ethanol rather than visible damage , temporary or permanent.
Would be hard to guage and quantify a level of water stress that would limit internode without pushing many plants and most elites into an intersex freakshow. Limiting rootspace from the start of flower with same cut from four to two litres knocks a week off a 70 day flowertime for the same yield in a fixed space , maybe the constant low level stress and the odd near wilting conveys a sense of urgency. |

Hmmm...this might have applications, here is the link to the original Cornell article.
https://www.hort.cornell.edu/miller/b...aperwhites.pdf I have a fast grower lanky strain that I will try this on...I will post results.
