Finding A "Friendly" Landlord: A Brainstorming Session

I live in a good size city (Portland, OR) and need to find a new place to live/grow. I can't afford to buy a house right now, so I will need to rent a place. This means having a relationship with a landlord. I'm sure there are many other folks who want to grow weed who are in the same boat.

Money is a factor...if it wasn't, I could easily rent a house with a nice yard and a basement and have very few privacy worries. But, I need to find a place for about $800 max per month. With city prices, there will be a few small houses and duplexes in that range, but most availability will be in apartment complexes of varying size. This means VERY close neighbors. And, all these neighbors have the same relationship with the landlord. Mucho potential for problems.

I am working on getting my medical marijuana card, and will likely be able to grow weed legally. This helps me regarding interactions with the police, but it doesn't help with landlords. To my knowledge, there is nothing that tells landlords they must rent to someone growing inside the apartment, and that if a landlord discovers a grow it is grounds for them to kick you out. Again, I'm sure there are large number of people that find themselves in this situation.

So, that is the problem. Regarding a solution to it, I don't think I've come across any advice yet, other than to not grow in these living situations, or be prepared to lie your ass off and take your chances. I don't feel that is a very good answer! The legal right to grow medical marijuana is fairly recent, is still in its infancy, and there hasn't been much time to work out solutions to problems like this one.

If I was a lawyer, I'd be looking at the legal ramifications of being allowed to grow mmj for your prescribed condition, but having nowhere to do the growing. How can this be legally right to allow a patient to grow weed but not provide an a place for this growing to happen? There is something similar happening in Canada right now because people who legally qualify for mmj, cant find a doctor to write them a prescription because no doctors will do it. This Canadian judge has said the country has only months to fix this problem or the laws that make marijuana illegal will be deemed unconstitutional, and weed will become legal.

I'm hoping we can get a brainstorming conversation going here to consider possible solutions to this problem. I'm not sure how familiar people are with brainstorming, but it basically involves throwing ANY ideas you have into the ring, and NOT judging the validity or worth of the ideas, because even an unworkable idea can spark another idea that might work, etc.

For instance....in a big city, there are literally hundreds, maybe thousands, of rental owners/landlords. Out of this number, there have to be some who support medical marijuana and its growing, especially in a progressive city such as Portland, OR. How does one find and contact these "friendly" landlords? Rental situations where the apartment sits alone, not in a complex, would seem to have the most potential (no close neighbors to worry about), but how do you find these folks?

There are many possible answers to this quandary, I'll think up a few more later, but others must have some ideas for this. Post 'em up boys!

That sounds real interesting plantkeeper. I'll check with some organizations tomorrow, but in the meantime, could you tell me a little bit more about what you know?

Thanks man!

You don't have to have on that is ok with growing, just one that stays out of your business.

Of all the folks I know of that rent, the landlords never do an "inspection" of the place while your living there. As long as the rent is paid on time, most places leave you alone. Its a business.

yeah sam, that's what I will have to do if I don't find a landlord who is cool with growing. But, having a garden in an apartment with close neighbors will be a pretty stressful living situation, just with the potential chance of being caught. Even if the landlord doesn't normally enter your apartment, if there is an electricity outage and your odor control gets turned off, that could cause some asshole neighbor to call the landlord. So many things can potentially go wrong. And I would much rather not have to live with that stress.

Look for a "slumlord" and you will probably be fine. He will probably be drunk when you sign the lease, so thats a plus too.

Plus, that will be the last time you see him.

Hehehehe...got a point there fattie! The main problem with finding a slumlord to rent from is....I would rather not live in a slum like neighborhood. I'd much rather find a sensible, pro-ganja landlord who runs a tight ship.

my suggestions are...

look for someone that just had their last tenants bounce on them. hurting to rent out the place.

meet with them, talk with them. feel them out. if you arent feeling it, move on.

but i wouldnt say a word to them about what you plan to do.

feel it out for yourself. predict what the outcome would be with them being your landlord, etc.

drop a few months rent in their lap and show them you arent there to play games.

explain to them you would like to rent long term and to make their place, your place.

hasnt failed me yet.

I would rather rent from a landlord who knows what I am doing and not have to stress about it, try and find someone who has a house that needs work and is in a tight situation with money.

My peace of mind is worth the 2 or 3 months rent "damage deposit" they get at the start incase I get busted or have to leave in a hurry and leave them with a mess to clean up. I don't ever expect that money back but its worth it to not be stressed out.
