Citizen outrage is fueling a new push to split California into two states. The 51st state would be called Southern California and Fresno would along the northern border of the new state.

The proposal would split the state in half, with 13 conservative counties being in the lower half, which include Fresno and Riverside.

Conservative leaders say the state is too large to manage and splitting may be the only way the areas back on track financially.

Critics believe splitting the state won’t fix anything and will cost a fortune to put the idea to voters.

Political Science Professor Robert Melsh said, “It takes millions of dollars to get the signatures necessary to put up an initiative and more millions to sell it… Where’s that money coming from?”

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone is spearheading the effort. Stone said, “I knew I’d be criticized. I’ve learned in my tenure of being a public official for 19 years that sometimes you have to some pretty outrageous things to get people’s attention.”

This is not the first time splitting California has been suggested. The request has been made over 220 times since California became a state in 1850."

I'd love to see it happen, but I think it would be much better as the Jefferson State movement

it would be cheaper for eveyone who dont like to live in cali to move. makes more sense too. if you dont like living there.. get out.

Cool. As long as we up the price of the water we sell the socal by like 10x. They will miss Norcal very quickly.

Since we already have a state named "New Mexico" if California does split into two states, they should name the southern half,
"North Mexico"
