ok, 2013 arctic melt is at its close, at least the NSIDC thinks so
the arctic melt? strangely exciting for some of us, hey, it's reality TV at its grandest
the result was a rather uneventul melt, considerably below the average year in ice surface
but much higher than 2012, which was a record, so make of that what you will
the northeast passage looked huge to me this year, like a flotilla could float through no problem, but that's just me

been the longest, coldest winter in the northeast for a long time
the northpole? not so much, was quite mild by northpole standards
and i know why, all the arctic air poured down to my house all f'ing winter
felt that way, damn, getting old, starting to get florida fantasies
the northern icecap was at around the 5th lowest maximum in the record
again, make of that what you will

another melt season at the top of the world has ended
looks a lot like last year, below average ice extent but not exceptional
the northeast passage, along the siberian coast, seems to open up most years
the russians like that

excellent link trichrider! right off the scale on arctic data
the one simple chart though was the most telling
showing the average extents for 80's, 90's and 2000's

living in the northeast, and this winter was epic
i think fellow northeaster's will go along with that one
so what's going on at the arctic?
low levels of ice, might be seeing a new low maximum this year
how can it be so stinking cold down in NY with less ice up there?
official story is warm air in pacific moved much further north than usual
which pushed down the arctic jet into my backyard
pretty much like last winter, more weather drama is on tap for the year?

i promised myself not to post in here again unless a big change happened
this looks big to me, chart is of total global sea ice, drama on the high seas
as i see it, events will start outpacing speculation, but all are free to form their own opinions

way too late, things seem to be accelerating quite quickly
it's a hard sell to the average person with the arctic air that is spilling down into the temperate regions
makes it feel like 'normal' winters, but they're not normal, they're taking a piece of the arctic with them each year
