Moving to Oregon need lots of input please!!!
Ok so in the fall I plan on moving with my fiance and son out to Oregon.. probably portland maybe gresham. Ive been trying to do some research and just havnt found what i needed, so if you have information your input would be much appreciated...Im wondering the best places to live, cost of living, and whether i should go legal and be a caregiver for my fiance and her gpa or just go under the radar... whats the laws if i was both there caregivers how many plants is it still just 6? with 18 veg I know top notch is expected out there and im pretty sure i can compete, but what can i expect to get out of my os or #s. here in the midwest i can break it down and get 5000 but i know out there i shouldnt expect to get 3.. her gpa said i could possibly get 250 on zippos ill probably do a 2-4k watt tent running coco as that is the medium i am used to.. prolly need to go bigger to expect to get paid out there but idk.. I got more questions but cant seem to think of them atm.... |

Been a while since I ran in those parts... but can give you some insight on where to live... PDX is a great city, but were I growing, would look more to the outlying area. Gresham is the #2 city in OR... maybe Beaverton now... but with urban growth boundaries for the City itself, the suburbs are the #2 & 3 city sizes in the State. Beaverton is SW... Gresham is East. Newer builds in the SW & W... older homes in the E & SE. Hillsboro in the West allows for some nice sized homes... some w privacy still... yet affordable.
If you drive 45 minutes outta the Cities, you get into some really nice farm & even mtn properties... working your way out Mt Hood... check out the smaller towns around there. Or go West out to the beach... really cool being out there too. Bend is just perfect... if you don't mind the other side of the Mountain... high deserts so very nice to grow in. Bend is just next to perfect... and w/in 45 minutes... you can really find some super nice homes for still pretty cheap. Did I already mention how nice it is in Bend? Eugene for a really chill & liberal college town. PDX is really clean & pretty... Bend has all the outdoor rec you could possibly need plus a great climate. Coast is lovely... lots & lots & lots of green... mountains & skiing... water rec & fishing... the Gorge with parasailing... just great country. God I miss Oregon... ;-) |

Gresham seems like a good idea but if you say theres newer houses around beaverton i might look into that. im hoping to rent something nice for around 1200 to 14 tops.......... is electricity an issue or is growing pretty 'lax there for the most part?

I moved into the area a few years ago and can share some insights.
First of all. Serious gang problems and heroin trade going on East of the river. PDX, Gresham, Milwaukee... Kids gets shot up over there twice a week. And that's not an exaggeration, there have been more than 40 gang related shootings this year. It is ALL on the East side. Gresham is ghetto. I very much suggest steering clear of it. Just imagine your typical 1950's and 60's cookie cutter house neighborhoods with overgrown trees and yards, peeling paint, and thugs hanging out on every corner. If that's your cup of tea... by all means. But I wouldn't live there if I had the choice. All over the greater Portland metro area you'll find very good deals. You should be able to find a 3bd/2ba in good-new condition for around $1000 per month plus utilities. I pay less than $900/mo after water/sewer/garbage for a very nice 2bd/2ba in a community (pool, gate, etc) on the western side of the area (Hillsboro/Beaverton/Cedar Mill). It is much nicer on this side of town. Intel and Nike have huge campuses up here so there is a lot of affluence on this side of town. Helps at least keep things new and clean around here. The surrounding areas are fine. Especially out near Mt. Hood. I want to move towards the beach in the south eventually. Growing up in Santa Cruz, CA makes me miss the ocean even though it's only an hour or two away. If you look at a map of the state it is pretty easy to identify the PERFECT growing spot. There is a place where the green from the central valley area hits the brown from the high country desert. Right where the green meets brown on the map is a fantastic place to grow at. The clouds have dropped a good amount of their precipitation which allows for plenty of clear skies in the spring. It's a very interesting kind of climate zone that I could compare to France or Northern Italy. Some of the best wine I've ever had comes from wineries poised right on this edge. If I had the opportunity to setup an outdoor "commune" then this is the rough location I'd choose for it. Somewhere around 3,000 feet. Bend is right in this area, and so is the area just west of The Dalles. With regards to being medical you need to look into just getting the card first. Here in Oregon it isn't like it is in California. You don't just complain of sore joints, or bad menstrual crams, they take it serious up here. The idea is that they only offer a req if you would be on medication that has the same effect of cannabis, or to offset the negative side-effect of other medications. If the people you plan on growing for are not genuinely sick. I'm talking, cancer, glaucoma, slipped discs, stomach/intestinal issues... If they're not sick you might have a hard time getting a card. Also, there is no dispensary system in Oregon. It is illegal, let me repeat that, ILLEGAL to sell your Cannabis to a genuinely sick person and charge them for your labor. In other words, you can charge someone for the cost of the nutrients, and the soil, and the equipment, and the utilities. You cannot charge them for your time or any labor used for trimming. There are enough medical growers out here that adhere close enough to this standard that for you to get more than $5 per gram, be it by the # or by the 1/8th, you'll need to travel out of state or sell to non-OMMP card holders (which of course there are plenty of). A fair price for some decent "Kush" (killer bud) is around $180 to 200 an ounce around here for middle-men. They'll turn around and sell that at about $10 to $12 on the gram (or about $40 for a sack of some VERY good bud). If you do decide to come out here to make money at this then just have the understanding that you will need to be very good at growing quality bud on the cheap, and I'd rather you just stayed where you are if that is the case. If you want to come out here to ease the pain of some significantly ill people with talents and genetics that are unique to you then I welcome this to the OMMP community. If you wanted to be a drug dealer under the guise of medical then head to California. OMMP is actually about medicine in the circles I frequent. |

I personally do not live in Portland but Eugene. The prices here are down to almost 2000$ for superb headstash organic medicine. I've got friends pulling 2500 for the best. BUT you can get away with selling a single ounce for 200$ wich I prefer to do. Portland is a very beautiful city with lots to do and yes a gang problem on the east side. I moved to OR from North Dakot 5 years ago and will never go back or consider living somewere different.
There are height restricitons on plants, anything over 12in tall and wide is considered mature. But you can have 6 in flower. What allot of people do is grow 6 huge plants in 15gal pots and get a # a piece thus getting maximum bang from buck by very few plants and less maintenance. If you can find a place to sell your ganja make sure it is very topshelf as everyone and their grandmother has moved to the PAC NW thinking they can grow great weed, wich was great in the midwest but not so much here, and have failed miserablly only to flood the scene with mediocre weed and lower the prices of the good weed. I do recomend Eugene though for cost of living, and low crime rate with tons of growers and local support. Kitty Piercy our mayor is pro medical MJ wich is an amazing thing to have behind you! Thanks Kitty! I hope any of this helps and safe journeys to you and your family. Stagger

Definitely be a legal caregiver, but don't run your mouth about it , and grow trees. Have a way to keep the rain off in the fall if growing outdoor. Weed is low buck for very good stuff. If you want to make money on it , you will have to be an outlaw , and the state , city ,and counties are trying to catch med people selling there weed. A bust of med sellers in Grants Pass recently happened and the police spared no expense , using a bunch of under cover narcs. I live in Oregon, but if wanted to make money from weed [I don't] , I would move to Cali.

Good luck, just knowing from past experience moving anywhere from midwest will generally cost more living expense wise. Worth it IMO on the simple fact there really is almost nothing exciting to do. Towards east and west are mountain ranges and then oceans past that. The coasts are deff where its at, looking at better weather/more activities.
