I run into red stemmed expressions pretty frequently. As I use a few DJ Short genetic expressions in my projects...this would not seem uncommon.

I believe that the red stems....are deep in the genetics....probably back to their landrace origins. I note that the more pink stems...or pink fluorescent...tend to lean toward a sativa expression....whereas the more purple/maroon often show on a more indica expression. Of course this is mostly an indoor perspective I have...but...

most stalks/stems need light to turn....if a section of stalk is taped over...I've found they will stay a lighter color...they'll stay a light pink blush....or green...where the rest of the untaped stalk will color up.

This is a more indica leaning expression...starting to make bud set..darkening up (though I've not flowered this cross before...I've flowered this expression...it is the Prune Juice mom's replica..she will be purple)....Cleveland Sage...please excuse the White Fly I was rinsing the plants down

Prune Juice = Querkle X Grape Krush



The same Grape Krush males were used in many crosses....in growing most of those crosses out (and outcrossing different lines within the same pool)...I've found the pink/red and purple/maroon....noting coloring is a fairly accurate way of picking out a indica or sativa route in veg.

I don't seek the clear headed high....however. I don't indulge in smoking weed....to be clearheaded. I do like to be way high but not stoned....if that is the same thing. I shoot for the unclear head....I do not guess if I am high.

I have to throw in my comment,

and say I think alot of people are mistaking a fuschia / violet / maroon / red purple tinge with the color red. I mean red is bright color, red stands out, red is easy to see..

I also believe nutrients / color / temps to play a role in stem color, thus muddling a definition of red stemmed plants.

I will say, I see only 2 red stemmed plants here so far, where is martian's F-13....

I see lots of red & purple "candy cane" striping on my fave strain since it's male parent originally was a Blueberry from DJ. There is also the occasional solid red or purple stem that normally presents after veg while in flower or on older plants & clones. Here are some pics below, enjoy!


First is the Swt #4 x BB/Swt Sk - a hybrid I made years ago which is shown below before the recent two Bx's to newer Swt #4 males. This was the sativa phenotype and had striping alternating with solid reddish/maroon color segments on stems. The leaf stems were solid purple/red. Very clear anti-anxiety buzz and very sweet grapefruity and starfruit aromas with some licorice & anise hints to it.



This was the male used to pollinate the mothers for the Swt #4 IBL project that snapped over his own stem due to the top male cluster weight. Quite the freak! He started out green and then striped stems which eventually turned solid maroon/red in flower.

red is red....color for sure can change with temps and jacking up K....what is the definition of red stemmed plants? Maybe that needs a better definition.

In all honesty....I doubt red stems end up smoking any different than non red stems. It is a theory after all....and highs are totally subjective.

Personally....doesn't matter to me whether a plant has red, purple, blue, green, or black.....they may...at best...be indicators of heritage or selective breeding....but I don't believe it reveals certain highs. That would be a hard sell imo.

Indoor or outdoor....beyond genetics....probably has more to do with color than anything else. Spectrums....if you can't replicate the Highland environment (soils, altitudes, etc)....why spin your wheels?

If we or U happened to visit in a commune which had only a red stem crop of sativa, and U ask them if the red stem is what affects the high, they'd probably say no, not at all. Because all were red.
-Then you'd have to move on to another phenotypic attribute to correlate.
But we aren't in a commune of Red stem Oaxacans

I think you could replace the word breeding with any other verb and be equally accurate. I think everything humans do is all about intention, and if MrA intends to find red stemmed plants with exceptionally clear heads, I believe he will.

Just another note...the clearest herb I've ever smoked was a recently harvested 2nd gen F13, grown indoors, that turned utterly purple. As in, completely purple stems (even in the shadows), completely purple leaves (tops and bottoms), and completely purple calyxes. Her sisters turned slightly lavender calyxes, purple stems with green shadows, and all have a slightly more 'intense' aspect in the head.

Nope....some of us are in a bunch of imitation hybrids though. Nothing wrong with that....but they will most likely fall short due to environmental factors. I have little doubt....that it is about environment.

I find it difficult to believe that anyone will ever nail down...consistently.... the sort of high you looking for....nothing seems consistent to me. If they nailed it already....then there would be nothing to look for....apparently that hatch has not been nailed...by DJ, you, or anyone else?

I wonder how many are of an age....where they actually...1st hand...smoked these great varieties....and at that time...even knew what they were smoking. I have a feeling....not many if any. Most just read and regurgitate the legend....is my assessment.

I also have my doubts on the amount of effort Mex farmers...back in the day...put into their breeding. Doesn't add up to me....that they put forth all that much into selection....there was no real need.

What weed comes close Mr A to what you seek? I know you like the red stems in Kali Mist and the Short stuff....but what else? I'm just interested...trying to see the motivation
