I am putting together a thread to help people understand the breeding process and my techniques for selecting high potency,high flavor/odor individuals....
It is helpful to buy a copy of R.C.Clarke's Marijuana Botany..This is the best book availible for learning the ins and outs of breeding..

What I am putting together will be a greatly simplified version that will concentrate on selection and easy pollination techniques..This will be the first in a series to help the intermediate grower produce high quality seeds for long term storage of incredible genetic lines..

I will also show pictures outlining this process all the way through ...From planting to harvest and how we find the special male to pollinate the easy to locate female...
Please try to show patience as this will be an ongoing thread to teach us all to be better breeders..

Discussion will be encouraged as you can only learn through experience and all breeders experiences are welcome..

I will open this thread for discussion when I get through with the first post and the first installment of pictures...Later this evening..

Breeding...
We are going to start with the single most important aspect of breeding...
SELECTION

I know most are going to say WTF when I say this but you have to go through somewhat of a population to find special plants to work with...Of course you can choose the best male and female from a pack of seeds and cross them...But if you want something special you have to be willing to "look"....You can find some nice plants in a 50 plant(seed plant)population but imagine what you will find in 500..I know this seems like a huge # but it isn't...really...
The majority of growers out there can only afford the space for 10 to 30 seed plants per grow(I can show you how to grow more in the same space)..But if you grow this amount out every grow pretty soon you will get through enough genetic material that these standouts will emerge and show themselves..
If you grow out several packs of high quality seeds you will find some killer plants and we will discuss more on this later..(where I think you should be looking)
Female:
The female for your project should be pretty straight foreward in showing herself as a standout and worthy of consideration for your project..I personally look for potency followed closely by odor/flavor..I know others will scream vigor,structure,blah,blah blah...But if the potency and odor/flavor are present in spades I think that the vigor will be there for the specific genetic line you are looking through..
If you have become a good grower then you can locate a strong female..If you want something considered "elite" you are going to have to look....They are out there in several places for sale..(more on this)
If you have access to an elite known cut then you are halfwy to your goal of making your own high quality seeds..
We are going to discuss the female more in a bit...

Male:
Now this is where you have to put in your work...males are trickier to choose simply because you do not smoke the finished product like you do female flowers..But do know that males produce visable resin..(capitate-stalked)
The indicas certainly show resin better than pure sativas but they will all show..If you get lucky you will find one that puts out a lot and screams to you "I am the MAN"!!
But we are getting ahead of ourselves...What I want to teach you is to find males early on..So that out of say 50 males you can throw away 45 of them very early on...
The 3 most important things early in a males life(10 nodes and under)is
Odor...
Odor...
Odor...
There is nothing more important !Period...You can wittle a shitload down to a few in a day...But you must know what to look for...This is why you can grow more plants than you think...It does not take a lot of soil or space for small plants..And you can toss most by the 10th node and many earlier than this....
But you have to make them talk to you and tell you their secret...

Yes i know i have dropped the ball but i found it and ready to put this thing back in play..
Males.......
OK we need to know how to find these strong fellas right?
Well like i mentioned earlier the thing you have to go by early on is going to be odor...especially with indica dominant strains...Some will start to stink very early and you need to tag these plants early on as soon as they start to put out good odor...What i do when i am going through and trying to knock out some of the weaker plants is just give them a whiff right in the top of the plant and see if you can sepparate the odorous from the weak odored plants...
When it is time for me to start looking for the best of the batch I will start the rubbing the petioles (the little stem that connects the leaf blades to the stalk or branch)of the largest fan leaves down about mid plant..p.these leaf stems put out a lot of odor and will certainly show you the most odorous(potent) male in the batch..This is an excellent way to choose the best males but there is another way that will show a males resin potential but it certainly requires a lot more patience...This is why i try to whittle down the flock to just a few males before looking for the resin producers...
Once you have reached this point what I generally like to do is take 2-3 clones of each male...I keep 1 under 24 hours of light and the others or the father seed plant will be flowered....The 1 kept under 24 will be the father clone producer if you decide to keep the individual...
The one flowering will be looked at very closely to see how much resin and if the glands are stalked...If they seem to be showing just a little or all seem about the same you can reveg the clone( 24 hours)and it will strangely throw out as much resin as it can and the standout will really show himself...You do not always have to use reveg to see what you want but it is a strange thing to see it really throw out resin showiing you potent males...

The odor and rubbing the petioles will generally show you the best plants..The odor from the rub will show differences that you will notice...As you grow more males you can test them side by side for the most odorous....And just toss the weaker odored plants...Of u if you have a plant that is pretty much on par odor wise and it is the most vigorous plant you can imagine then of course this should give it more consideration as extreme vigor can also show special plants...I just think personally odor rules the potency department when trying to find special individuals...

A few more things on males...
Now armed with the knowledge of the past few paragraphs can you imagine the amount of plants you can "look" through?
Being able to discard 95% of the plants early on(by the 8th node)long before flowering is ever initiated leaves a lot of open space to let the females fill in and cover...Where you thought looking through 30 plants might be a challenge you now know that at least 10 or 12 plants will be discarded by the time they are knee high and you could have easily started with 40 or even 50...
In a 50 plant seed garden you will discard at least 20 plants keeping maybe 3 or 4 males and have maybe 25 healthy females..
You only need a few good floros to keep the males happy as long as you keep the bulbs close the will develop just fine..
Once we have found a suitable place to raise our males we can take and hack off the top couple of nodes and check to see how hollow the main stem happens to be.....Now we have all read RCClarkes and DJs statements on the high THC properties of hollow stem plants...This usually holds true but is certainly not always the case..The Superfruit cut is a prime example..Easily as strong as the elite cuts of today but only had a slightly hollow stem....
Most of the really strong,males I have found in the Chem and OGK lines have been very hollow....And stink to high heaven...Really reek over their siblings...The really special plants will reek up the area without even a touch and you can walk in and just know a special plant is there for the taking....
I always plant seeds to go with my clone crops as there is nothing better than finding a truly special plant all on your own...Its a great feeling.....
