I am currently cooling my lights and scrubbing the air with the same fan and exhausting the hot air directly out my window.

Is it safe to exhaust "scrubbed air" from a grow directly out a window?

Do carbon filters really eliminate all of the smell?

How long do carbon filters usually last?


If I buy another fan I could change my setup so the scrubbed air would be exhausted out of the tent and into the room it sits in. And then I would set up seperate ducting to cool the lights and exhaust that out the window. Would I be better off doing it this way?

I change my two year rated carbon filter out every 6 months.
Out the window is fine, as long as it's not completely obvious looking.

The last window I vented out of I made the exhaust look like one of those dual mini fans you see in people windows so it wouldn't look strange or out of place.

I would be more worried about venting your unfiltered air from cooling the lights out the window. Those hoods often are not sealed tight and pick up a little plant smell and send it out in the exhaust.

I'd run all air exhausted out that window through a filter, and make sure it looks discrete from the outside

Yes but be aware that there will be an infrared glow coming out the window from the warm exhaust air.

I built a frame around my window that sticks out 4 inches from the wall. From the outside all you see is closed blinds. The exhaust doens't blow the blinds at all but it can be heard from outside when it is silent.

I have mine going through a 6 inch dryer vent, I mounted it on some particle board cut to ft the window hole. It just looks like a normal dryer vent. It vents to my backyard so no one will really see,

I wouldn't worry about the smell as long as ALL the air is "scrubbed". The heat and any noise is another issue entirely... if you can exhaust into your attic i would recommend that. The exhausted air mixes with the air already in your attic and is released out of your standard roof vents.

Just as long as you can check the outside of the window from time to time to make sure your filter still has some life in it.

Yeah it is safe to vent scrubbed air out of the window! Just make sure its not obvious whats going on. Also keep in mind you produce a heat signature when you vent heated air out of a window. You can use a old window ac casing to vent the air out of at the window so it looks as if the heat is from an air conditioner. This kinda conceals the heat signature your exhaust would produce.

They work very well, Do they eliminate 100% of the smell probably not, They do eliminate enough to prevent a human being from smelling it. Police dogs will still pick up on the scent with no problem though.

It varies depending on the carbon used for the scrubber some last longer then others, I generally change my scrubber every 5-8 months, Soon as I start to smell carbon in the air I know the scrubbers only got a 30-90 day period left before the stank makes its way thru, So I use that as a guideline for changing out the scrubber. When I smell carbon in the air I change the scrubber within 30 days personally.

I would say your better off scrubbing the air directly before its exhausted outside. The shorter the run from the scrubber to the window exhaust the easier it will be to fully seal the duct work running to the window and the less likely it will be for any smell to get picked up along the way.

Also anytime you are venting straight out of a window, You need to add a duct muffler at the end right before the air leaves the house. This will remove 95% of the sound the fan produces.

If you have any leak from the duct work between the scrubber and the fan the fan will suck air into these cracks pulling air into the duct work that has not been scrubbed, So be sure its sealed very well. After setting it up and getting it running make sure to set by the window and smell the exhausted air for any possible odor that may make its way thru, If you smell something chances are there is a leak in the duct work. I personally like the Phresh Filters they are quality around the board.

Hey Blazer, you answered my biggest question on the police detection dogs v's the carbon filter scrubbed air.... Just curious on how you know, not the sort of thing you'd see on myth busters! although i have seen on that show that it is impossible to hide anything from a dog who is well trained... ie coffee coffee wrapping, carbon paper etc... my theory is to 'decoy' the detection dog with a small 'personal tin stash' in around the area i dont want them to find...

if anyone else has any info or experiences on this subject it would be truly appreciated... with a fully stealth operation the dogs are my only real concern...
