Although I don't live in the north pole, a desert in fact, the last few days have been on the colder side. Like I said earlier, I was worried 70F air was making my seeds sitting in water not very happy. EDIT: I have adjusted the controller to around 67ish, hopefully dropping the temps as suggested without losing some warmth. I would hate to get more males because of it. |

Day 4 - Germination
Over 12 hours have passed since adjusting my propagation tray temperatures. The min has not dropped below 70, and the max nothing over 75.9. Humidity has been hovering around 97%.

I would never ever use a heat mat. I have no idea why they even sell them. What are we trying to incubate an egg or somethin heh? I throw mine in a paper towel in a plastic bag or in burpee coco plugs with 0 heat and no dome on. Both methods work 100% and I see tails in a day or two. Coco tends to be a bit quicker. Last time I had seeds up in day. This is with no presoak.
Hope everything turns out good but hearing 4th day germination doesn't sound good at all.

If the seeds are fresh they will pop in 24 to 36 hrs- in my experience,if there not up by then, there old and the seedlings that do come up are weaker and slow growing.
Ive never used mats, bleach, scarify or any other methods to pop. Wet a good paper towel like a bounty, let the excess drip off, place on a hard plate ,wrap with saran wrap, place in a dark spot thats room temp, and in 1-3 days theyll pop. If you place in the dirt or pro mix,use an object to make your hole so the seed to fits in , whats going to make or break is the depth of the hole u place the seed in. If the hole is too deep, theyll curl open in the hole. Too shallow, they will not get a good root structure or a good foot hold. Once the seedling is in the dirt at the proper depth, cover the hole lightly, cover the cup with plastic, rubber band it and voila,in 2- 3 days a seedling appears, thats it. practice on bag seed b4 using expensive seeds you payed good money for. eyes- |

97% humidity...WHY? You are asking to ruin your seeds. You are not cloning, that high of humidity is screaming Damping off. No offense, but maybe you should try to start some worthless beans if you do not know what to do. FWIW, a seed just needs to be moist. Paper Towels are useless, and just gives a reason for failure. Soak your seeds for 12 hours, then plop into some damp Coco. They will be above ground in a couple of days. Domes are for clones, get if off of your seedlings. |

I disagree with most people here. 100% humidity is fine until they pot the surface of the soil. Then turn it down to 75%. Also, seeds germ best at 75-80 degrees. Not sure why everybody is saying different. I have about 20 grow books and I believe they all say that temp is ideal. Anybody have any proof to back up their claims? Not trying to get confrontational, just want to learn the best way. With this method I am 39-42 with my beans for my outdoor grow. Not bad if you ask me.

Ok, from the top-down...
40AmpstoFreedom: Let me start off by saying thank you for taking the time to be apart of my grow journal. .. I totally understand how you feel about the heat mat thing. They are truly too finicky! In the future, I may not use this method again, will have to wait and see the outcome first. But in the meantime, this grow, I have managed to keep the temps in check, for the most part. Currently the meter is reading 73.6F, and 97% humidity. To be fair to the heat mat approach however, it only hits the MAX temp posted in ambient air. Therefore I am assuming the mat's physical temperature is at least a couple of degress cooler; imo again. Also to remember, it only heats up after hours have gone by and the air has 'cooled'. As for the 4th day of germination, in the past, with my personal grows, only without the mat, my seedlings have seen surface late 4th day/early 5th day, roughly. I am currently in the early evening of day 4. As per many books I have read and own, including the latest HT magazine, germination can take "12 hours to several weeks, depending on the seed structure and germination conditions." As stated by an earlier poster, I am not trying to be confrontational, just trying to get to the bottom of all this. I am a total OCD'er. Texian |
