Turn it off or hibernate?
For energy savings, is it worth it to turn the computer off or is hibernate mode so little watts as to be fine? There is supposed to be some wear involved with shutting down and starting up.
Also, about how much wattage does a computer draw just going to a website such as this. I have a 650 watt power supply computer and max draw is around 500 watts. Gaming must be much higher draw than what I am doing now.

Did you mean sleep vs hibernate ? Because during hibernation, everything is powered off, memory content is copied on your hard drive and power is off. Then computer consumes only about few watts - it takes some power even it's switched off manually (of course when it's plugged
). As for sleep mode, it takes few wattage more than hibernate, just to keep RAM content. It's also worth mentioning that sleep efficiency depends on your BIOS version. As for power consumption overall, it depends of your configuration of course, but nowadays desktop computers are pretty much high wattage. Only CPU can take up to 90W, add screen, graphics card, hdd and optical drive and there's a lot energy and lot of heat - so it takes even more energy to run fans to prevent head damage. Alternative are laptops, where every element is designed as low-wattage; so-called "netbooks" takes even less power but it's also less performance comparing to standard notebooks. As for browsing internet - modern websites are full of flash animations, adverts, videos and sounds, so it can take a lot energy too, but not that much as gaming. Check out this link if you're curious how much power takes your PC and you don't want to connect wattmeter. Hope I helped you. https://www.journeysystems.com/power_supply/

Don't get me started on sleep mode LOL, do a search for problems with sleep mode in google and see how many people have probs with it. Hibernate is not worth bothering with, you may aswell save your work and just turn off.
I just got a brand new comp and guess what ?sleep mode don't work and just to sweeten the deal my comp was turning on at 5am to update freakin media centre ! super epic fail by microsoft they set this as default in win7, now people want to kill bill gates for getting woken up at 5am every day when their comp turns on hahaha. |

I got a lap top I would shut her down every time I was done with it, found it to be a pain in the ass to start it up so I just put her to sleep now and I've had no problems at all.

Probably you already know, but I'll say you can check what has woke your PC by typing command: powercfg.exe -lastwake As for sleep mode have you tried : Control Panel >> Power Options >> Change plan settings >> Change Advanced Power Settings >> Multimedia Settings >> when sharing media prevent idling to sleep. If that's some device (usb mouse, keyb) you can check command: powercfg -devicequery wake_armed And here's another thread that may be useful: https://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...on-520051.html I run vista on laptop, never had problems with sleep or hibernate, so that's pretty all I can say, sorry.

Although SSDs can be lightning fast, they're completely different from regular hard disks. If you use them as a regular disk, you risk performance degradation and shortening the life span of the memory cells, e.g. do NOT defrag them, enable TRIM, create "aligned" partitions, ... I'd turn mine off and unplug it if I was trying to save/lower my e-bill.
Also another tip, anything plugged into the wall, thats not being used...UNPLUG IT! |
