Evolutionary Biology Research On Plant Shows Significance Of Maternal Effects

This is an increasingly important question in light of new environmental conditions brought on by global climate change. A University of Virginia study, published in the Nov. 16 issue of the journal Science, demonstrates that plants grown in the same setting as their maternal plant performed almost 3½ times better than those raised in a different environment — indicating that maternal plants give cues to their offspring that help them adapt to their environmental conditions. Evolutionary biologist Laura Galloway, an associate professor of biology at the University of Virginia, recently completed a study of the American bellflower, a native wildflower that commonly grows in both shaded areas and areas that receive full sunlight for at least part of the day. She focused on the transmission of environmental information between maternal plants and their offspring. Galloway planted some seeds in light conditions similar to their maternal plants and some in different light. She found that plants growing in the same setting as their maternal plant outperformed those planted in a different environment. The work was conducted in a natural habitat at the University of Virginia’s Mountain Lake Biological Station in Southwest Virginia. Since seeds typically fall close to their maternal plant, they grow in a similar environment. When seeds are dispersed to different environments, Galloway found that the plants may suffer for one generation, but as long as the seeds of those plants grow locally, their offspring will recover. “We found a temporary mechanism of adaptation to local environmental conditions,” says Galloway. Since plant adaptation is typically studied on a permanent, genetic level rather than in direct response to environmental conditions, Galloway’s insights are unique. Galloway was led to this line of inquiry by chance. She was surprised to observe a number of years ago that plants that had experienced drought had smaller seeds than those that had not. This highly visible physiological change within only one generation intrigued her. “Historically maternal effects have been viewed as a complicating factor — an inconvenience,” explains Galloway. “But we have found that they can dramatically influence the performance of an individual.” Newd |

Maybe it would be a cool idea to produce seed and then put it away until next year same time.
Also one would need to use the same nutritions, feeding schedule, soil, light and location. Of course there'll probably not be 3times more bud but who knows what's worth? |

I've thought a lot about this.
It's good to see that there is some botanical evidence for this. I know of a few studies of humans were this type of phenomenon has been observed, and I'm very sure there are many more!https://discovermagazine.com/2006/nov/cover https://www.newsweek.com/2008/11/21/w...t-destiny.html https://www.time.com/time/health/arti...951968,00.html I'm of the mindset that cues during gamete maturing and female gestation play a huge role in the evolution of a species. A lot of people think and have observed that high UVB and/or arid conditions increases the thc and resin amounts of their plants. I believe the original idea here is to mimic the environ that typically sees highly psychoactive plants. So, I say, take the next step and provide this stimulation during pollen/ovule growth and gestation of the fertilized seed. |

-From recent research I am doing these “cues” talked about above are actually very likely to be epigenetic changes, of which not only the parental generation is of importance, but the grandparental generation, due to the manner in which epigenetic changes are inherited.
Epigenetics is a long bridge between the gap between our environment and our genetic code. |

Yeah, the Time article I linked had evidence of change out to 4 generations! All be it in humans. :/ Seems males in puberty and females gestating is where the most changes are noted. I would also imagine that sperm and ova developement would be another situation ripe for epigenetic changes. Take it from the Japanese: Feed your children well!
