JC I knew I could find you if I kept surfin..long tails indeed. H3ad told me once that long tails were a must. They are a pain to separate if germed to close. The G-13 from Head cracked overnight for me..some other strains I'm cracking now are just starting at 4 days. Good luck with the grow, I'm tagged...DD

Hi Doobie....thanks for stopping in the forum here...always a pleasure to see your posts...however, just would like to make some clarification....especially concerning new growers, or those new (or less experienced) to germinating seeds. I would have to say that long tails to an inexperienced grower would not be the way to go....too many possibilities for them to break the taproot...exampled by just as what happened to JC here. Some of us are more experienced with the delicate handling required, taproots emerged from germination are usually extremely fragile, and crisp (filled with fluids) and will snap very easily.

I posted this before when a member questioned the benefits of germing in paper towel vs directly into soil (medium):

Seeds contain all the initial nutrients required to germinate and start forth the seedling stage...therefore placing a seed to germinate into a medium by a noobie grower is where most often things get off to a bad start. Also many new growers keep the medium too wet, or too dry...in an attempt to overcompensate due to inexperience.

DGS recommends the paper towel method (non printed...white only), especially for those who are new to germinating seeds and/or new to growing.

If 'you' have success with the method you employ, then there's no reason for you to change...perhaps means you are confident in your soil mix and have good results...and are not a noobie grower.

Imo, the paper towel method is the best fool proof stable environment a grower can use to germinate...provided the paper towel is not left to dry out.

As for handing the germinated seed....I'd not recommend anyone wait as long as DGS does to transfer from paper towel to medium (whether it be soil, coco, rock wool, etc). I've been handling seeds for over 30+ years....and know how to handle them delicately...plus I have a softer ladies touch....seeds germinated via paper towel method need only just begin to show a white tail from the crack to be ready for going into the growers selected medium.

Read above.....plus....there is no shock in transplanting a properly germinated seed to medium, provided it is done at the correct time. If one has forgotten about them in the paper towel and the tap root has emerged too much....then this could cause damage to the lengthy tap root. Those with attention to detail and are anxious to see their seeds germinate rarely let them go that long...unless like I said, they forget about them.

The germination pics seen in this thread were permitted to go longer outside any medium than I'd recommend others with less experience do....when DGS does germination tests, it's not just to see the early emergence of a tap root for germination statistics, but from a breeder standpoint to further see the health of the tap root as it grows a bit using it's stored nutrients.

Ah ha!! So this is where you're hanging out these days, JC!! Been missing your last thread, so I'm stoked to find you here..

Hope all's well with you these days, man. By the look of things, I'd say that's the case. The G13-IX is one I'd like to give a whirl, as well. Nice choice.

I need to go grab something... There we go, and a nice Heineken. Here's to you, JC!
