LC's organic mix #2 and Guano recipe #2

This is my first grow with organics (my third recent grow overall) and so far it has been great. I had some issues with heat, light, and pH but overall it has been very easy this time around.

The seeds were germinated in moist paper towels sandwiched between two plates and set atop my water heater. I had 100% germination within 48 hours (7/8 had popped within the first 24 hours).

They were transferred into dixie cups of the lc mix and placed under a 26w floro for about 3 days. This was a mistake and I will not be repeating it. The floro was to weak; two of the c99s were actualy growing up and trying to wrap around the light. So they were then placed under a 250w hps and have been much Happier.

Next I had to move grow locations temporarily into a much smaller closet space which resulted in significant temperature increases. The lights on/door shut temps in the closet soared to nearly 100F, compared to the 65F temps they had been born into. I have since moved them into a better spot and they are much much happier.

By the time I had moved them out of the closet all of the c99 leaves had folded up taco-style. There was also widespread rust-spotting (see pic) on the older leaves of all the plants. After reading MNS threads in the infirmary, I determined the issue was pH related. I was using store bought distilled water that pH'd to 5.4 which is too low for soil. The lime in the soil mix hasn't had enough time to buffer the mix properly and with the pH of the water so low, it was causing nutrient deficiencies in all the plants. Switching to 1/2 mix of tap water and the distilled brought the pH up to around 7 and resolved the spotting issues.

Whew!

Balls?

Rust Spotting on C99

Violator Kush #2 Looking good, smelling great!

RoadRunner #2 flowering after 3 weeks of 20/4!

A couple of the c99 pictures. They are growing nice and uniform. I hope theres at least one female out of the four!

Weekly update:

VK 2 and all 4 C99's got transferred into 5 gallon smart pots for flowering.
VK 1 and RR 1 are both runts and *may* be culled soon.
RR 2 is in full flowering and from what I have read it is not worth transferring to a larger pot at this late stage.

It looks like C99 #1 has male preflowers, which is fine as I want to pollinate the VK and C99 for F3's.

I'll post up pics when the plants look a little less droopy. I purposefully under-watered this week to make transplanting easier and they are showing stress from it. IMHO, when the soil is completely dried it makes removing and replanting easier.

Today is day 1 of 12/12...
I am expecting to harvest the c99 at day 56 and the VK at day 63 so that is March 6th to the 13th. Just in time for spring break!

Some pics!

Day 1, week 0 of 12/12

Roadrunner 1&2 well into flowering. I'm guessing 4 more weeks till I chop. The runt (left) looks like she might yield pretty decent.

VK #2, can't place the smell but its nice. I have high hopes for this one. The other (not pictured) is a runt but no harm letting it mature.

C99 #4 and her preflowers.

C99 #2 and her preflowers.

C99 # and her....wait, whats this now?

Looks like she's a he!

Now for some specifics:
VK2 and all c99's are in 5 gallon smart pots.
The RR's and VK1 are in small 1-2 litre pots.
All using LC's mix #2 and Guano recipe #2, no additional nutrients are going to be supplied.
Hand-watered using a combo of distilled and tap water.
3 weeks under a 250w HPS, 1 week under a 600w MH, and now under a 600w HPS for flowering.
Using a cheapo hood inside a cab, cooled by a 6" duct fan and a diy pc case fan. Keeps the cab in the low to mid 70s lights on and low 60s lights off.

Beginning of week 2 of flower.

Here's the result of taking "testers" of one of the RR's:

Yes, that's the first four nodes gone up in smoke to satisfy my curiosity. I'm a light smoker so the potency was fine for being so immature when plucked. I let the first set of mcnuggest air dry for a few days but I got impatient and nuked the rest.

It looks like this is the only male of the four C99's. The little balls are starting to fill in on the top nodes. I'll pluck them and selectively pollinate some branches on the other plants. I'm thinking VK x C99 might be an interesting cross.

C99 girls confirmed.

The VK's look exactly like they did last week, just with a little more growth. I'm anticipating stretch to begin this week. Thats all for now!

Beginning of Week 3:

Decided to chop the lone male after consulting with some experienced growers. I decided that pollen collection was a bit more than I wanted to attempt this grow and I did not want widespread seeded flowers. The male wasn't that special either, I'm confident there will be another like him.

The RR I'm going to chop soonish just to get some smoke. The bits I tested a few weeks ago were potent enough for me and they aren't growing any bigger. I made the mistake of keeping them in small containers and with RoadRunner they need a big container early on to grow to full potential. *That is according to a few grow reports I read.*

Plant Porn

VK #2, nice and big. Just beginning to stretch and show some flowers. This and VK #1 both smell of Basil and Mint - so very delicious I want to cook with the leaves.. VK #2 is a runt that I'm not wasting bandwidth on.

RR #2, or as I call her "The Little Runt that Could." Its about 7" tall in a small pot (.5 litre?) and has great looking buds and smells strong. Smells sickly sweet like fruit flavored vitamin chewables.

RR #1, or whats left of her. Would have been a nice yielder had it been in a bigger pot and had I not smoked half her buds. Smells very strongly of cherry-flavored vitamin chewables. To be honest I'm not a big fan of the smell.

C99 #4 and #3, bud sights filling in, faint fruity smell, just started stretch. I will feed them a tbs/gallon of molasses in week 4. All C99 females are about the same size and composition.

The C99 male that I chopped.

Beginning of Week 4

Final week of life for the two RoadRunners. I will chop them both in a few days and take some close up shots with my super-duper eyeclops. The C99's are filling in nicely while the VK looks to be about a week behind in flowering.

PICS

RR#2 Leaning Indica, very short and squat (was a runt from seed).

RR#1 Leaning Sativa. Twice as tall despite the half sized container. Both RR's smell of cherry vitamin chewables.

VK#2 Leaves aren't drooping, just orienting towards the light in the center. Very bushy, Indica leaves, nice bud sites. I expect it to really start filling out starting this week. Will get fed 1tbs/gallon of BS Molasses.

C99#4 The shortest of the three remaining, otherwise identical in every respect.

C99#3 The tallest, also closest to the light.

C99#2 All the C99's will get BS Molasses this week.

Thats it for this week!

Beginning Week 5
Last weeks molasses feeding went very well, all the plants showed positive responses to the added carb. Growth has started to fill in with flowers on the C99's.
The VK seems to want to stretch still which is becoming a slight problem. I've raised the light as high as it will go and its only a few inches above (but offset) from the top of the VK. Friday I decided to measure the VK after I noticed it grow from the molasses feeding and it was 28". Today she tops out at 34", by far the tallest in the closet. The breeders description of VK is "short, bushy plants 45-55cm in height (indoors)." As of today she is at 86cm..

Pics:

VK #2 (left) and VK #2 (86cm) side by side C99 #3 (58cm)

C99 #4, strongest fruity smell of the bunch. Shortest at 48 cm.

C99 #3, the bushiest and tallest of the C99's standing at 58cm.

C99 #2 Good fruity smell, buds are frosty. Stands tall at 57cm.

Beautiful! Those look great. They have such a sweet fruit smell. Really enjoy seeing other C99 pictures. Mine are a little over 3 weeks in.

Thanks stopping by CD!

Beginning Week 6

Culled VK#1, it was a runt from seed and always showing signs of stress (heat, water, over water, nutes ect). It smelled great but beyond that had no redeeming qualities. Honestly if I want basil smell I'll just grow basil.

VK#2 stopped stretching, now I'm just waiting for her to start filling out. Fed some Molasses at 1tbs/gal.

C99's are doing nicely, filling out and smelling wonderful. I would not call them pineapple or watermelon, just fruity. C99 #3 now having the strongest fruity aroma of the bunch (they all smell very fruity). Fed some Molasses at 1tbs/gal.

Pics

C99 #4 and #3; #2 pics did not come out that well.

Top colas of C99 #3, 2, and 4, respectively.

VK#2, about 3' tall now.

Thats it for this week!

Beginning Week 7-Washington's Birthday Extravaganza!

Some taco-ing on the c99 leaves. Not sure if its from ph or running out of juice in the soil. I have only fed with BS molasses and it started soon after that; I'm thinking it may have been too high of ph.

Otherwise they continue to fill out and smell great!

The VK is just barely filling in which is a bit of a disappointment. After this girl stretched nearly two feet in a matter of a week I had high hopes for a heavy yielder.

Pics

VK top cola, about as filled out as the C99's were in week 4-5.

C99 #2 top cola, really nice looking and smelling.

C99 #3 top cola, close up of top cola, and a side branch. Very resinous and definetly the fattest buds of the trio. I am very pleased with how she is turning out. My only regret is not cloning her.

C99 #4 top cola, top cola closeup, and a side branch.

I decided to break out the Eyeclops! and take some 100x close up shots of c99 #4. I took a leaf from the lower branch (pictured above) and got some shots. All clear trichs so far.

Beginning of Week 8

Last full week before harvest, I'm so excited!!!

The c99's are all doing great. I trimmed most of the fan leaves off to pretty them up a bit for this last weeks photo shoot. They smell great, are very resinous, and completely filled out. The buds are all covered in sticky goodness-just touching one makes your fingers stick together. I am going to be making trim hash for sure.

The VK has been a let down. It stretched like mad and never filled out. The buds are not very resinous at all and are pretty pathetic looking (see pics). I still have 3 more seeds left so hopefully something good will come of it next time.

Pictures:

C99 #3

C99 #2

The VK and its pathetic looking trichromes. The sample used in the close up was taken from the main cola near the top.:frown:

C99 #4 This one is definitely a keeper, unfortunately I did not take any clones. I think this would be best in a SOG with its minimal side branching, short stature, and long thick main cola. It smells great and is very resinous. I plan on taking some more macro shots of the trichromes as they develop over the next week. Probably one per day will be uploaded so if you find them interesting/informative please check out my album.

Beginning of Week 9 - The final week!

Today marks day 56 of flowering for the VK and C99's. I am going to chop all down on day 60. In the meantime I will be watering once more with a gallon of straight tap water that has been aerated. I will make gumby hash with the trim from all the plants. I'll do a little from each and then one big mish-mash of hashomness.

No pictures of the plants today as I'll be doing a follow up post this friday with pictures.

Here are some trich shots:

C99 #4 at day 49. Mostly cloudy and clear, no amber.

C99 #4 at day 56. Mostly cloudy with ~20% amber.

VK at day 49. Pathetic trichome development.*

VK at day 56. Some trichomes, mostly clear with very little amber.*

*Taken from the upper area of the main cola.

Harvest Day 60

After two days of darkness, day 60 has come and all the plants are chopped and drying. The C99's are jarred and starting the cure after 3 days of rack drying. The VK I let stay up an extra day so it will most likely be jarred tomorrow or Wednesday. Each plant took about an hour to trim but left me a fair amount of trimmings for gumby hash.

Final Pictures:

C99 #4 after 2 days of darkness leaning from the heavy main cola.

C99 #4's main cola. Very resinous and aromatic, also dense. This would have made a nice SOG plant.

C99 #4 all trimmed and ready to dry. The trimmings in the tupperware was used for Gumby Hash, the other fan leaves were discarded.

C99 #3 after 2 days of darkness.

C99 #3 main cola. The very top was too close to the light and was burned very badly. I ended up chopping it off completely and discarding. It was the thickest and densest of the three.

C99 #3 all trimmed and ready to dry.

C99 #2 after two days of darkness.

C99 #2 main cola, about the same length as #4, but thinnest of the three.

C99 #2 all trimmed and ready to hang.

Overall yield was fairly uniform with a slight edge going to C99 #3. I am very satisfied with how they turned out, some great genetics.

The VK at day 61, 72 hours of darkness. At this point I was feeling pretty lazy and did not take any pictures of it. Yield wasn't as bad as I had feared, but considering it was twice the size of the biggest C99 it was pretty sub par. The smell was very nice and the leaves had mostly turned dark purple. Not as resinous as the C99.

The gumby hash I made from the trimmings. This was my first time doing any kind of hash making so there was a lot of waste. I am pleased with the quantity I ended up with, about a tablespoon and half's worth. I mixed all the plant trimmings (C99's and the VK) together for this so it should be an interesting smoking experience.

Well that's it for this journal, thanks for checking it out!

Scrappy-doo

Hey man how did those C-99's turn out after they dried?

I've been thinking of picking up Gypsy's F2's for some time now.

Did you end up keeping any of them? What's your overall impression?

Bloody hell, man, you can't cut down plants on a fixed-time program like that, you are cutting them way too "green!" You are cutting with more than 50% of pistils white and rigid and are missing out on everything good that truly ripe weed has to offer! In the name of god noobs, please don't read this grow and think that you can decide the day that you harvest based on "flowering time". Seed companies exaggerate frequently in this respect and their are a multitude of other factors that influence flowering time. PS: you are overfertilizing and even a good flush won't negate the effects of doing so.
