RIYADH - Saudi security forces made the kingdom's largest ever drug bust, foiling a bid to smuggle in more than five tons of hashish, a newspaper reported Tuesday, citing drug enforcement agency officials.

"The Drug Combating Department in the Riyadh region, in cooperation with the customs at the dry port in Riyadh, foiled an attempt to smuggle 5,200 kilograms ( 11,464 pounds ) of hashish into the kingdom," on Monday, Arab News quoted the departments director as saying.

Eight suspects, "seven from an east Asian country and one Arab," were arrested as they attempted to receive the cargo at a warehouse, said Major General Othman al-Assaf.

Another three suspected of taking part in the operation were arrested later, he added.

"The drug consignment contained 5,291 kilograms of hashish, which is the largest quantity of drugs ever seized in the history of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia," the official said.

Saudi Arabia applies a strict form of sharia, or Islamic law, and convicted drug traffickers can face beheading.

i think more people than not in saudi arabia get high, or these guys would not be taking the risk of losing their heads...

i'm sure that hashish is pretty popular still even though it is haram (forbidden)
same with drinking alcohol...
the aramico (american corp. oil people) people put out a booklet called "the blue light test"
it was basically a how-to booklet on making moonshine, plus, so much sugar is sold in saudi arabia as well (for making booze)

I'm not familiar with Saudi Arabia at all, but that is a possibility. Here in New Zealand we get a lot of contraband coming into our country en route to other places, stuff coming from N.Z. is less likely to get searched. N.Z. passports are also supposed to be worth lots of money in Europe because we are considered 'safe' and we don't need visas for lots of places.

I worked with an ex-marine who was in desert storm. They visited a bunker manned by the Saudias and the Saudi soilders were stoned out of the minds on hash and opium.

They all had weapons, but no ammo!
