Baba Ku Korner (various recreational cannabis confections)
I want to post up some of my crosses and things I have been working with, and plan to work with.
I don't have lots of grow space. I have a good sized cab and another small box, and I do a healthy outdoor each year in both containers and ground. All my pollination is done on target branches usually with a small paint brush. Only the OD plants in containers get dusted, and I bring them inside to do that. I am a bit anal about getting pollen mixed up and I try to keep controls and precautions in place to keep Murphy from showing up. Although, I was told by an old man once that "Shit happens, boy...if you eat regular." This is F13 x Anesthesia I have very high hopes for this cross. My goal is to bring some heft in my F13 without compromising her floral funky goodness. She is the queen of my cannabis, but she is very petite. If she were a chick, she would definitely be a spinner! ![]() lol...no I didn't top the seedling. The top is from another plant. I think they are kissed with the DJ mutant... I bet other DJ growers see it too. I can see mom in all of the seedlings. They all have the dark purple stems and stalks and look very similar to F13 seedlings. I think the mom is really carrying this load so far. I will pop quite a few more, but right now the inn is full. I plan on going out of my normal 1:1 mode, and using a few so I can get a good look at the F2 of these. Mom in veg She is the thirstiest plant I grow, but you can barely feed her anything. Grows like a jungle vine until you try to feed her. Then she just stops and curls up. Back to low ec water and she takes off again. |

The first four seeds I cast all show deleterious mutation. Two as you could see were completely mutated almost beyond recognition.
The F13 mother that I used for this cross shows very little mutation, per se', other than she does show variegation and has a unique three finger leaf pattern in veg and single finger in flower. Although as you can see she carries in lots of mutation to her progeny. I have grown out her siblings that were heavily mutated just out of curiosity, and the results are about what one would expect to see from a mutant. Fire smoke, from a very scrawny and sickly looking specimen. This mom seems to be passing on lots of these mutants down the line. This also reinforces my thoughts about how choosing a large population from F1 stock is far more important than choosing by selection methods. The F1 you think is fire may or may not carry the fire down the line. It also may carry things you don't want, yet can't see. Selection should really not start in full till F2. Constraints of area, and security makes it hard for me to do this thing like I want, and I can only search through so many at a time. If I were not confined by such things, I may well go back to the F1 seeds and find another mother(s). But I don't know that I could find one easily that didn't carry these deleterious mutations. So, I am going to try to fix it out of the line a little at a time with what I have, and hope I end up with smoke I like from consistent seed stock. This project should show the downfalls of the 1:1 breeding scheme if nothing else. I decided to cast some more seeds so I could look through 15 at a time. I am seeing some plants coming up that do not show the mutation yet. Two of the first four cast show mutation, but not a lot. If they are fems I will probably flower them out, but they will not be used further. Most of the seedlings of this batch came up nicely and look good. This one I guarantee will be mutated. I could cull it now, but I will let it grow for photo sake. |

Lovely work! As a fellow hobby-breeder, I can sympathize w/ the imposed restraints on just how many plants one can look at. Keep up the good work!

I can only dedicate room to look through 15 seedlings at a time.
However, with this cross I could easily do double that. The cull rate of this is very high. In fact there is not much at all to keep yet. Maybe one that is even in the ballpark of a potential. I love my F13 mom, but she sure does pass on that mutant trait heavy. I like that she is so dominant because she good potential as a breeder since she will not reverse. Can't make this girl show stamen to matter what. But she throws the DJ mutant big time. Makes selection a breeze in a way, since all I need do is see the mutant, and its a cull. Here...cull along with me... Some start out nicely, but the mutant takes over... Then there are two runts. These two sucked up the nutrients in their cotyledons real fast, and they are a bit locked I think. All the other plants still have some green left in their cots... I will see if they recover and take a close look. They are much thinner leaf than the rest. Finally a symmetrical growing plant. The rest have all shown mutant by this stage. I have hopes for this one. All of the seedlings of this group of 15 have the same magenta stalks like their momma. The mom F13 does indeed show some variegation and you can see it wanting to show in all the mutants. |

I have now popped 30 of these seeds, and I have found one decent looking male that I have hopes for, and one very nice female.
The cull is very easy, and as soon as I see mutant, it gets pulled. I did keep a couple of the culls and flowered them out just for a look. I fully vegged and flowered out a sister of the F13 mother last year and it sucked. The smoke was fantastic, what little there was from the freaky little misfit. I find them a big waste of time, TBH. Here is one that has some branches that are showing some great bud starts...and some mutant branches. SOme buds look nice... Some gargle balls... This one is a bit less mutated... ...although it still clearly carries some mutation. This is an early shot of the female I am keeping. She is a very beautiful specimen with healthy leaves and a very deep gloss. I have had her tied over forcing cuts for a bit now. I have half dozen cuts of her in the cloner now. |
