Dear Member/Supporter, Happy 2011 from NCCPN! We are starting this, our third year, exciting and hopeful that this will be our year to see Medical Marijuana legislation pass into law in the state of North Carolina. With the new directive from a federal agency, The Veterans Administration, and the AMA's calling for reconsideration of medical marijuana laws the roadblocks claimed by our state lawmakers are now gone! No longer can these state lawmakers challenge our appeal for safe, legal access in NC when the American Medical Association, the National Academy of Scientists, the American Nurses Association, and the American College of Physicians have all, in their expert opinions, called for common sense policies and safe, legal access for patients. WE ARE WORKING FOR YOU: On January 8th, the Board of Directors; our Medical Services Director, Janet Osburn, and NC lawmakers, area veterans, Michael Krawitz, Veterans for Medical Marijuana and concerned citizens met in Rockingham for a strategy and planning session. A new bill will be introduced in the early session with bi-partisan sponsorship and dedicated lawmakers who truly believe in the rights of NC patients.; 1000 Watts Magazine: NCCPN Executive Director, Jean Marlowe, has been invited by 1000 Watts Magazine, a medical marijuana magazine, for patients, by patients, based in Rhode Island, to write a monthly commentary for publication in their magazine concerning medical marijuana activities in NC. NCCPN Medical Blog & The Mountain Xpress News Medical BenefitsWe are pleased and honored to announce we now have a new NCCPN Medical Blog which is moderated by our two medical professionals. Dr. Milton Byrd, NCCPN Medical Director and Janet Osburn, our Medical Services Coordinator, will be the moderators of this blog. There will be posting of links to new research and news videos, stories and articles, up-to-the-minute medical and scientific studies and info with a question and answer area for our members to ask questions of these professionals. Also, we are pleased to announce our Medical Director, Dr. Milton Byrd, has been invited to write a regular commentary on our issue for the Mountain Xpress newspaper. The paper's Raleigh correspondent will be speaking with our President, Perry Parks, regularly for updates. In The Pipeline: The Leaves are for the Healing of the NationsWe are working swiftly and in a focused manner to build, develop, register and make available a NC Cannabis Patient Advocacy Handbook for our members and for our legislators in NC. This handbook will help give you the necessary information to be your own patient advocate and take your health care into your own hands. Your health care should be between you and your doctor, not the government nor its agencies. A Thank You to our Members: We at NCCPN would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your continuing loyalty and support to our organization. We have experienced some rough financial times which has limited our ability to assist you, but we are trying hard to gain financial support and funding through every possible avenue. Our goal of providing safe, legal access to cannabis/marijuana for patients, caregivers and researchers has only intensified. This will be our year.WE WILL WIN! Sincerely, Jean Marlowe NCCPN Executive Director

NC: Penalty reduction for personal possession to be debated
NC: Penalty reduction for personal possession to be debated
Dear icmag: Yesterday,3/10, North Carolina State Representatives, Kelly Alexander, Jr . (D – Mecklenburg) and Larry Hall (D – Durham), introduced legislation decriminalizing possession of less than an ounce of marijuana! Please e-mail your representative today and ask that he or she support HB 324. HB 324 would downgrade simple possession to an infraction, instead of a misdemeanor. It would also reduce penalties for possessing up to an ounce of marijuana from either a suspended sentence (for persons with no priors who possess under half an ounce of marijuana) or possible jail time to a civil fine of up to $100. HB 324 could easily save North Carolina millions in law enforcement costs while raising revenue through collection of the $100 civil infraction. In addition, it will end the heavy-handed punishment of marking individuals as criminals in their records for possession of marijuana, a mark that can prevent individuals from getting jobs and qualifying for assistance programs. Please e-mail your representative today. Also, feel free to pass this along to your friends and family so they can advocate for sensible marijuana policy, too. Sincerely, Robert J. Capecchi Legislative Analyst Marijuana Policy Project

In doing some reading, just like Florida and every other state, the Republicans seem to be the roadblock, while Dems seems available but unwilling to make a stink about it.
Shame. |
