(NASA) International Lighting in Controlled Environments Workshop

Hey all,

Here is another, albeit older, resource for full text topics on photosynthesis, phytochrome (red and far-red light), cryptochrome (blue, UV-a and UV-b light), etc.

Two caveats are: (1) some info is outdated, but for the most part it's spot on; and (2) in some of the parers from that symposium, authors use the term PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation), when they should use PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Destiny) when referring to irradiance (amount of light at canopy). Older texts used PAR in place of PPFD (i.e. umol/m^2/second), but, PPFD is the proper term today, not PAR. The PAR is the range of light that drives rate of photosynthesis (Pn) to most, i.e. 400-700 nm. Some current authors also use the term "PAR watts" when they are referring to watts [within PAR range] per meter^2 when measuring sunlight outside. Also, some very current debate is about wither or not PPFD should be using the word "density", or some other word, but for our purposes, PPFD is fine IMO.
