Full text thread: post papers you want in full text...
hey all,
If Oldpink allows it, I would like to have a thread where Ic'ers can post papers they would like to read in full text, but not have to pay for. I, and others with access to many for-cost academic journals are willing to download the full text, and then upload it here. Getting the full text without paying for it does not take any money away from the authors; just make sure to cite them because it's only fair to do so.

nope I as well have access they are free if you write the author, but electronic databases scan them then charge a premium to view them.

^^^ yea that. The authors, at least every one I have spoken with, are very happy to see their work being read instead of locked in an ivory tower. Just make SURE to cite the authors to give them full credit; that's a deal breaker if it's not done.

I have one extremely exceptional publication by Wilhelm Foissner et al (extraordinary photographs included). I originally bought it from a publishing house online for around $5. When I wanted to reference to a friend and looked it up the price was more like 30 Euro. I emailed Wilhelm and he seemed a little put off that I had got it so inexpensively. So....you never know.

Interesting, I wonder if he was put off by the price as being a poor reflection of his efforts? What I mean is maybe he thought his work was worth more than $5. I wonder how he would feel if asked about people getting his work for free, if the cost was $30. I hazard to guess the two issues are separate.
But you are right: "you never know". Thanks

Bring it.
Bring on the knowledge!
I would like thank everyone who is even thinking of posting up. I just looked into joining the American Horticultural Society, purely for the access to the various journalsand it wasn't cheap. It is hard info to come by and stay current with unless you are in the world of academia or funded by a corporation.

One point:
If people ask for papers, like HonkeyTonk did above, please allow a few days for them to be uploaded. Some folks have access from their home IP address and some folks, like myself, only have access from Uni IP address. 1. Also, ICmag has a 1 mb size limit for file uploads, so using good file host is an option to upload big files or a collection of files. Preferably people should use file hosts free from JavaScript and ads, and NOT on U.S. soil (do not use RapidShare, MediaFire, etc.; they suck and are on U.S. and use JavaScript). A good example of a good file host is File-Upload ( https://www.file-upload.net ); that is located in Russia and doesn't require JavaScript or use ads. 2. If people upload files to a file host, PLEASE compress the files with 7zip (freeware for windows, linux, mac, etc; https://www.7-zip.org/ ) and use a password to encrypt the file! |
