Talking A Birds Eye View of my Cabinet Grow

Once again I will be documenting my cabinet grow here!.
I grow in a small space which can be challenging. The cabinet I'm growing in is 24" deep x 30" wide x ~48" tall. Growing in a small space takes practice and is a challenge and I keep changing my technique to meet that challenge.

My goal is to get a harvest of 1 gram per watt of light and the best I have achieved is 0.66 grams per watt.

I'm using a 400 watt HID light. MH for veg and HPS for Flowering.
I'm also running a 6" in-line fan with a 400 cfm Phresh Air carbon filter.

Nutrients: GH Flora Nova Grow, GH Flora Nova Bloom, Hygrozyme and Drip Clean. I like to keep it simple so I'm not using any bloom booster etc.

Once again I'm growing in Air Pots and using Blumat automatic watering device.

This time around I will be doing a LST technique to start with then adding a SCROG to it.

For the LST I have added a modified tomato cage to the top of the Air Pot so that I have something to train the plant to.
The top of the cage has a circumference of 34", So in theory I could have a 34" plant before flowering inside a 48" cabinet.

I forgot to mention the strain that I will be growing.
Last time I did a test grow for Field Marshall Seeds of Lady Berry Kush and That grow turn out great, But with the long flowering time and the fact that I now have over 1/2 pound of it sitting in jars. I decided not to continue with the same stain again, But I did clone the plant so that I do now have a mother plant so that I will be able to repeat the grow again in the future.

This time around I was gifted two LVPK (Las Vegas Purple Kush) clones. From the samples I have had and reading reports on the stain this stuff is amazing. Great purple color, Nice large dense buds, and a great high.

CFL Grow,

I used the Air Pots on my last grow and they seemed to work good. When I removed the soil from the pots and looked at the root structure I did notice that the roots that did not spiral around the sides but either terminated at the surface or did a 180 degree turn and went back into the soil.

I started with a DWC grow for my first grow then for my second grow I went to the Air Pot with the Blumat watering system and I don't see myself going back to the DWC right now due the ease and how my plants are doing with the Air Pot and Blumats.

I decided to go ahead make the next upgrade to my cabinet this grow.
I want to add some PL-L lights to the sides of the cabinet.

What are PL-L? and why?

PL-Lights are a linear compact florescent light that use a separate ballast. This will allow me to install the ballast in the mechanical room of my cabinet along with the HID ballast. And just install the bulb inside the cabinet. Then the PL-L bulb will be 16" long, 39 watts, Lumen's mean 2510.

Right now I'm planning to just use the PL-L as added side lighting during the flowering stage which I will also be running a 400 watt HPS light.
The three different bulbs I have to choose from are 4100 K, 3500 K, and 3000 K.

Would you use a CFL along with HPS and if so which one of the three lights would use?

Everything is looking great gdbud. You're doing that purple kush right You're gonna love the stuff. I'm taking mine at a minimum of 60 this time.

My PK's are the size of a washing machine right now

For supplemental I would go with linear lights like the pll over the cfls. The way my t5's spread light is impressive, I have grown plants with cfl's and still grow moms and clones under them.

Anyways, I'll be watching along,

cheers

Hey bud. Sorry I haven't checked in on this thread sooner. My computer completely died and I don't exactly want to be checking icmag on friends' computers.

Your veg looks to be gowing well. How high above the medium do you plan on placing your screen?

Also, where are you planning on placing the PLLs? On the walls? Or intra canopy? I'm designing a DIY LED array right now to flower my cab, and am planning on placing the LEDs primarily between the buds, rather than above. If I can manage to find suitable heatsinks, I'll be able to create individual LED modules of 10W or so, and hang them each placed perfectly nestled amongst my colas, while evening out any cold spots with a few lensed LEDs overhead.

For your situation, perhaps a PLL inside the canopy, and if you have an ideal spot (depending on how your buds form), a small CFL tucked between a few fairly tightly spaced buds? Given how much reflectors eat up efficiency, I really feel like incorporating "vertical" ideals are crucial.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts Smiley and 007,

I ordered the 16" PL lights and ballast yesterday I got both the 4100K and 3000K lights.

I'm thinking that I could use the 4100K to help keep the stretch down then switch to the 3000K for the rest of the flowering stage.

I thought about adding the PL lights vertical like Tilt did, But if I did I would need more than 2 lights to do it right. Also if they were vertical it would not do much to help reduce the stretching for most of the cabinet.

So I'm going the mount the PL Lights to the side walls of the cabinet and attach them to the shelf tracks so that they are adjustable as the plants grow.

One of the problems I have had growing in a cabinet is the head room for the stretch on some strains I have grown, So by adding A blue spectrum light with the HPS I'm hopping to reduce some of the stretch thus making the cabinet more efficient and bringing me closer to the 1g/watt goal.

I have hand watered them four times now with nutrients instead if running the nutrients through the Blumats and the plants are loving it. I'm watering with the nutrients every third day and the last two times the nutrients were at 1200ppm I was afraid that it might be a little hot, But the LVPK are loving it. Next time I might take it up to 1400ppm to see how well they do.
