"No joints for me," says Deputy Fitzpatrick about cannabis claim
Kildare North TD Michael Fitzpatrick won't be lighting up a joint any time soon. Nor has he ever been prescribed cannabis to treat his motor neuron disease.
Deputy Fitzpatrick hit the headlines last week after it was reported he said he would take the illegal herbal drug to alleviate the symptoms of his illness. Speaking to the Leader, Deputy Fitzpatrick was adamant he is against the legalisation of the drug. "It was solely in relation to my own condition," he explained to the Leinster Leader. "If it was prescribed to me I would take it. I'm suffering from a terminal illness so if it could help in any way and if a medical physician prescribed it for my particular complaint, I would take it, but that is not to say that I am in favour of legalising it. I would be against that." Deputy Fitzpatrick, who was speaking to the Leinster Leader after the Fianna Fail think tank held in Galway on Tuesday, was adamant that it has never been prescribed to him since he was diagnosed with the disease earlier this year. "I'm not in chronic pain so I don't need it," he said. "I haven't taken a disprin since June 2009. My right arm is limp but all other bodily functions are fine. I couldn't lift a bag of potatoes with my right arm but I can still drive. "There will be no joints for me in the future." Meanwhile the main subject on the cards of the FF think tank was job creation for the future. https://www.leinsterleader.ie/news/34...ays.6533002.jp |
