quick question "do wicks and soil mix?"

Can i combine soil and a wick system? I want to use moonshine mix for s.o.g setup,1liter bottles with wick system for watering source. clones w/ short veg trained into single colas. i want to eliminate pumps for stealth so i wanted the res to have just plain water. I like wick idea because plant controls how much water it gets. My other questions are will the soil be over saturated? and will 3/4 of a liter bottle be enough soil to support a 1wk veg and 9 wk flower? feel free to point out any issues i missed.

Yes you can use wick with any medium. You bottom feed with wicks so you wouldn't need to water from the top at all. I would keep the water in drip trays under pots and just let the wicks pull the water up. I would put rocks or perlite on the bottom few inches of the pots with soil on top of that with a single wick going all the way up to the transplanted root. Water only once at the top at the time of transplant and then water from the bottom only after that. Just a thought.

Here's what I learned by trying the same thing you intend to do. The roots become bound in those size containers, and can present problems. Flushing often is the key there. However, using the mix you intend to use might make for easy overwatering scenarios with the frequent flushing. The wicks will draw water at a certain rate. The plants will feed at a certain rate. My advice is to handwater until the plants reach a point they can uptake enough water to keep up with the wicks ability to draw water. Otherwise you will have soggy medium. If I were going to do it that way again, I would opt for a perlite/vermiculite mix. Much easier to maintain a healthy root mass in those size containers. Hope that helps.
