Question Operation "Big Dog Rubbermaid", but i think i need some help?

Hello Micro grow family.

Its finally gotten to the point to build a rubbermaid. I have two 30gal tubs ready for use.

My original plan was to fill it up with 6 x40w 2700k and 4 x 26w 6500k's for a total of 344w of CFLs. I had this plan pretty much set in stone so i went and got my 26 watters. Then today i go to grab my 6 40 watters, but guess what they weren't in stock. I looked up and down didnt see them, didnt even see reminisce of them. Maybe they dont carry them.At 10 bucks a pop i dont think they sold many.

With that said i feel i was led in a different direction. So i left the store with this. Utilitech 100w Metal Halide Yard Light. I wanted to just grab a 70w HPS but they only had one in stock and the box had been opened like it had been returned so that was not something i wanted to buy and take apart.

How much wattage do you guys think would be too much for 30gal rubbermaids. Id like to run 2 70w hps and 1 100w MH, at a minimum for 240w. Idealy id like to add another 100w mh halide for 340w, but that seems like to much.

Also can anyone point me to the direction of how to assemble these lights after you taken them apart. Im sure i could figure it out but i hate going into projects blind.

Lastly most importantly cooling. I gave you a lay out of perspective power of 250-350w that i would like to run so according to redgreenery's chart ill need 158 -253 cfm's to cool my perspective wattage. Any fan suggestions? Im probably going to do a two fan layout like in reds thread. One fan for the lights, and a lower fan with carbon srubber. What kind of fan(s) can fit this bill. Ive been looking at delta pc fans. Only problem is hard finding a good source to buy from online. Every one just seems to have a couple of fans.

Thanks for looking any of tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Well I took the lamp out and gave it a look over.

Its pretty straight forward. The ballast, ignitor, and socket are all one piece. They unscrewed from the fixture housing. The the photo sensitvity socket was removed, and that was it. It makes me wonder, as they refer to housing as "fixture housing Assembly with Ground Screw. So it seems i have to ground this out some where

Hey Fuzz!! The link below should help you with the halide, if not, the growroom and design thread(look for the link-o-rama) might help too...
have you ever thought of an axial fan? I just saw some and thats what I'm getting after my grow(check it out!!)is done...
google Dayton Axial fans..they run on regular 115-120 volts but they REALLY move the air!! far better than any pc fan...
The Delta's are awesome, so are Nidec, Thermaltake, Sunon etc...
Hope this helps bro...

Wattage is determined by footprint or square footage, not res volume. 50 watts per square foot is considered standard. Over 100 is generally considered the point of diminishing returns.

If measuring in inches: Length X Width ÷ 144 X 50 = Wattage.

Thanks Freezerboy

34in H

22in L at the base 29in in the middle

15in w at the base

22L* 15W=330 330/144= 2.292 2.292*50=114.6w

Ok so what does that mean exactly. 114w is the maximum i want to run in this space?

I've seen 250 watt HPS's in Rubbermaids Fuzz...it can be done but you have to work everything around ventilation/exhaust..
I'll look for the thread because this guy has been doing it for quite sometime...I think he may have stacked 3 high though...
I had way more watts than I needed in my pc but I did get fat, dense buds too!!!
best of luck on this build because I can't wait to watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

114 would be the minimum. Over 229 would be considered by many to be past the point of diminishing returns. Not harmful mind you, just past the point of getting return on expenditures. It would also mean more cooling which means more noise if stealth is a concern.

I'm not sure if there's a difference in MH (I'm no expert) but in the MH link you have posted, it looks like a vertical fixture..do you plan on hanging it vertical? I'm thinking if you run it horizontal, make sure it's safe to do so.

good luck.

fizz it would be cheaper to get a 250w hps light from online....ive seen some refurbished magnetic ballasts/light/hood online for 100$ for a digial one like mine i paid 138$ shipped from hidhut.com iirc......good luck man and hope it dont get too hot mine got too hot in a 2x2 tent with a cooltube and enough exhaust had to duct in a/c for it to be in the acceptable temp ranges

Yes 250w of HID's seems like perfect number for this combo

I was reading something about that. I believe its the type of bulb, but im not sure. I think certain bulbs can only be used 1 way vertical or horizontal. If thats the case and its only the bulb ill see if i can get it swapped out for a horizontal bulb, if its has to be vertical i can still manage

Thats what it would seem, but im pretty committed to this 100 MH at this point, so if anything ill just buy a 150hps to complement my MH, for ease of installation

Thanks a bunch all.
