Magnesium

I was wondering what people do for Mg in organic hydro?

I've noticed alot of organic things (kelp, molassis, etc) are fairly complete except Mg. it also seems to me like cannabis might be a plant that uses a ton of Mg.

I've been giving some things like Azomite and glacial rock dust that has some Mg in it, but I feel like its not quite enough (or just not releasing fast enough?)

anyway, I added some epsom salt to the rez today, but I don't feel so good about it.

(I've been off the CaMg+ for about a month now. no deficiencies yet, but it seems like the explosive growth is not quite happening. they are growing for shure, but its not at a scary pace.)

I don't really give a fuck about OMRI...
I can still not like epsom salt right?

kinda intesting website though. what are these, OMRI's bylaws? epsom salts are 'allowed' if your soil is Mg defficient? a strict reading would seem to imply that crops will be organic only if your soil has a 'documented deficiency'. all this organic jurisprudence is a bit over the top imho.

I think I'm going to get some Biozyme, which I'm hoping will help to break down all this rock mineral faster.
anybody tried Nigari? its on the list that Carl Carlson provided, and I think I've seen it in asian growcery stores. its a seawater product, and is apparently a mix of Mg Sulphate and Mg Chloride. means 'bitter' in japanese.

well, it seems that adding the salt has helped things a bunch. deep green color is setting in, and they are picking up the pace... damn, I guess its hard to beat ionic solutions as far as specific elements are concerned.

I think it should be possible to supply all the needed Mg from Azomite, but you would probably need an insane amount of biological activity to break it down in time.

Im stuck for the moment with 12 rather large plants feeding off a 40gal system, so its maybe silly to even try.

I also have some SEA-90... I have hesitated to put any in the rez, but I suppose that would have a touch of Mg?

also, all this might be more related to pH than the amount of Mg present. I had stopped checking pH all together for the past month, and it was pushing 8.5...

I don't know if this will make you feel any better about it; but Epsom salts is used to make tofu out of hot soymilk. If you pour three cups of water with a few table spoons of dissolved Epsom salts. It will curdle the soymilk into white clouds of protein that can the be ladled into cheese cloth and pressed into a solid lump of tofu. This can then be labeled organic if the soybeans were organic. I would say even more dilute solutions of Epsom Salt (magnesium sulfate) would be safe for plants.

And be careful with using magnesium towards the end of a grow as magnesium is something that makes pot taste like "shit shit".

Earthworm castings, alfalfa extract, and fish emulsion all have magnesium. They also have calcium which is always good to feed magnesium with calcium at the same time.
