"A keen eye for selection"

I'm quoting Dutchgrown from a recent post, but I'm curious on some of the basic thoughts that go through your mind when you're assessing different phenos for keepers.

Of course the high is important, but what other things about a particular pheno strike your fancy and make it a keeper to clone from?

What would you tell the most basic grower (me) to keep an eye out for on their first go'round?

are you asking about making a selection for a mother plant or about breeding?

even with a mother plant you may have a wide assortment of reasons to keep a plant as a mother.some people choose for yield, some for the quality of the buzz or speed of finish,so many different reasons....

Dutchgrown has disabled reputation
There are a multitude of contributing factors....most of which boils down to personal preference. Wherein possible, it's always a good idea to clone EVERY plant you start from seed as backup, so that in a few months after you have flowered/harvested/cured/smoked the final fruits of each plant, you can then make a decision on a keeper, or to keep searching....I think we are all continually searching, we may find favorites, and those with outstanding attributes, but there is always something else that catches our eye and we then go through this same process all over again, repeatedly.

hey BS, these are still unknown plants till i actually get to smoke them, but here are some plants i have my eye on as possible mothers

this is one of my Witches Weed

note how symmetrical the plant is,this one has been topped once, but notice the vigor and uniform nature of the plant, plus it has at various times had a most aromatic nature, always a good sign

same plant

same plant a week earlier

even in veg it was a stand out

but thats just one plant out of 20 some odd,in the end it may not be the one....but i have a feeling....

Thanks a lot for the input. That makes sense and I probably already knew the answer. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on any secret handshake or something.

Thanks for the visual Unc- I see what you mean, she sure does have good form and vigor.

I have my eye on a couple of mine in particular too. This is going to be fun!

Hey Unc just wanted to say that I am running some Witches Weed and that looks very similar to a phenotype I found that seems to be more on the sfv/chem side, but with a very sour fruity smell. Good luck with your plant, Id be willing to bet she will be special

My only problem is I think all 10 are great, but I have to decide on one. I am sure I have at least 3 males. Still no balls showing. But I too have only topped my swtst99's once and they are all very symmetrical in shape and size. And they all have nice hybrid vigor.... thanks to M'Lady.

Hey JC and Uncle, do you guys top all of your plants, or just the DG strains, or just some of the DG strains? Just wondering cause I've never been much of a topper- trimmer...kinda like the tree look, size etc.

it up to the plant, had i vegged longer i would have done more topping,on the clone run they will prob be multi topped bushes, also,i saw that DG herself topped many of these strains, she's a smart cookie and wouldn't do it for no purpose
