Landrace Seed Collection: Destinations???
hey all, planning to eventually get my arse on the road and collect some/HEAPS of landrace strains in their natural environments. i want to see the world and might as well be productive while at it haha
i'm also wanting to suss out a post grad project, a phd most likely, in europe studying the phylogenetics/phylogeography of Cannabis sativa L. this means i'll collect as many samples of as many different Cannabis landraces as possible to compare their genetics to one another and form a genetic tree (by location) via the use of mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite analysis. relatedness of strains from all the different locations is compared and one is able to create a genetic map if you will which shows where the species is most likely to have originated and how its genes have spread through space and time. to my knowledge no one's done it yet and i'd love to shed some light on questions of mechanisms of divergence and at what times, gene flow, the overall evolution of Cannabis. so let me know what locations you've been to or heard of that would be well worth sussing out if you would be so kind cheers everyonedarwin

![]() Very interesting goals and aspirations darwin. Mapping the multiple varieties of cannabis would be a great benefit to the world we live. One thing to consider is although it is a slow process, environments are ever changing. So this would be work that needs to be done until the end of time, though we have some catching up to do! Great topic, and the first I will tag for future reference. Sincerely the best of wishes on your travels. Sadly the most needed documentation and collection are in areas that are currently engulfed in human conflicts. As these areas are in direct threat of dramatic change to environment and native species due to human interaction. Areas in ecuatorial africa, the middle east, and parts of south america would be great places to start your progress. Again with the utmost sincerity, best wishes and good vibes from me to you on this quest. It is something we share, this goal of being a true international canna-cartographer. nam myoho renge kyo |

Hey BD,
Dont forget the finches of the islands. Sprouting some seeds from Madagascar. Seeds do hold many genetic mysteries within their shells it would seem. A phylogenetic tree, eh? Sounds very interesting. Good Luck and Cheers KA |
