SHREWSBURY - The Regional Drug and Counter Crime Task Force executed a search warrant at 50 Longfellow Rd. in Shrewsbury at approximately 6:00 this morning. During the search police seized approximately 120 marijuana plants that were being grown in the house and arrested four adults.

Police also seized high intensity lights, fertilizer and two vehicles. Evidence was found at the scene connecting the suspects to the outdoor marijuana grow discovered on Gulf Street in October.

According to Shrewsbury Police Chief A. Wayne Sampson, the investigation that led to today’s arrests and seizures began approximately five weeks ago when a resident reported the discovery of an outdoor marijuana grow in the Gulf St./Rte. 290 area of Town. Police investigating the report found 20 plants being grown in a field near Rte. 290 off of Gulf St.

Surveillance was set up by Shrewsbury Police around the outdoor grow, and within 48 hours the suspect returned to the scene and removed most of the plants. At that time the suspect also took the police surveillance cameras.

As part of the investigation, Police released a sketch based on a description of the grower by the resident who initially reported the find. Flyers describing certain details of the suspect as well as the composite were sent to the surrounding neighborhoods. A tip in response to the flyers eventually led the Police to the family at 50 Longfellow Rd.:

In a press conference at the Shrewsbury Police Headquarters, Chief Sampson said that the indoor grow system found at the house represents one of the most significant drug finds in the Town of Shrewsbury. “Every single room had evidence of narcotics distribution,” Chief Sampson said.

Of the four adults arrested at the scene, one was a senior at Shrewsbury High School, which is significant because of the possibility of narcotics distribution within a school zone. The arrests made at the house were of a mother, daughter, son and the mother’s boyfriend.

According to Police, the Longfellow Rd. home is a mere quarter of a mile from the outdoor grow that was found off of Gulf St. in October. Among the evidence found connecting the suspects to the Gulf St. marijuana plants were the very distinctive red gas jugs painted green that a witness had seen the grower carrying.

Between the outdoor grow found off of Gulf St. and the indoor grow at the Longfellow Rd. home, there were 140 marijuana plants making up the distribution operation. The total street worth of the drugs is estimated by Police to be around $125,000.

Financial records were also seized by Police as part of the ongoing investigation. The suspects will be arraigned in Westborough District Court tomorrow morning.

The press conference held at Shrewsbury Police Headquarters at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon can be seen on SGTV Channel 30 at 6:00 p.m. tonight.

Two Shrewsbury Men Face Drug Charges

SHREWSBURY - Early Saturday morning Shrwsbury Police arrested two men and siezed $561 in cash and drugs. The incident occurred at about 1 AM when Shrewsbury Police Officer Timothy O’Toole was patrolling the Gulf Street area of Shrewsbury.

Officer O’Toole was checking the area of a new development known as Summit Ridge Estates, which is a paved road on which houses have yet to be constructed. Officer O’Toole encountered a suspicious vehicle in the development. As he approached the vehicle it appeared that the occupants were hiding items inside.

Officer O'Toole smelled marijuana when he arrived at the vehicle and observed what appeared to be marijuana on the on the passenger's sweatshirt. The officer removed the passenger from the vehicle and observed a baggie of what appeared to be hallucinogenic mushrooms in the passenger’s side door compartment.

Officer O'Toole pat-frisked the passenger and recovered a second bag of what appear to be hallucinogenic mushrooms. The passenger was identified as David W. George Jr. , 18 of 6 Wesleyan Street, Shrewsbury.

The driver of the motor vehicle was also taken into custody. He has been identified as Kyle Howe, 18, of 35 Sias Ave., Shrewsbury, MA. During an inventory search of the motor Officer O’Toole recovered 11 glassine baggies, a large glass jar containing what appeared to be marijuana, a pipe for smoking marijuana, a scale, a large heavy zip lock bag containing more mushrooms and $377 in cash from the console of the vehicle.

Officer O’Toole seized a total of $561 during the investigation. Police have additionally placed a hold on the Honda Civic the men were discovered in when arrested. The Regional Drug and Counter Crime Task Force is working with the officers involved in the arrests and will be forwarding information on the vehicle and the money seized to the District Attorney’s Office for review and possible seizure.

Both Mr. George and Mr. Howe were charged with Possession Class C with Intent to Distribute (mushrooms); Possession Class D With Intent to Distribute (marijuana); Possession Class C Substance (mushrooms); Possession Class D Substance (marijuana); Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (pipes, scale); and Conspiracy to Violation Controlled Substance Act.

Both suspects were released after posting $300 bail and were arraigned in the Westborough District Court on Monday. Officer Paul Duncan assisted Officer O’Toole with the arrests and investigation.

Possession of any amount of marijuana is punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $500. For first time offenders, the court will sentence the offender to probation and upon successful completion of the probation period, the offender's record will be sealed. For subsequent offenses, probation may still be possible.

Cultivation, delivery or sale of less than 50 pounds of marijuana is punishable by up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. For 50 pounds or more, the penalty increases to a mandatory minimum of one year in prison and a possible range of 2.5 - 15 years in prison and a fine of $500 - $10,000. For cultivation or sale of 100 pounds or more the mandatory minimum sentence is three years and up to 15 years in prison, along with a fine of $2,500 - $25,000. For 2,000 pounds or more, the penalties increase to a mandatory minimum 5-year sentence up to 15 years in prison and a fine of $5,000 - $50,000. For any amount of 10,000 pounds or more, the mandatory minimum sentence is 10 years with up to 15 years in prison possible and a fine of $20,000 - $200,000.

Sale of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school adds another 2-year mandatory minimum sentence for sale and can go as high as an additional 15 years in prison and a fine of $1,000 - $10,000.

The manufacture or sale of paraphernalia is punishable by 1 - 2 years in prison and a fine of $500 - $5,000, unless the sale was to a minor, in which case the penalty is 3 - 5 years in prison and a fine of $1,000 - $5,000.

Conditional release: The state allows conditional release or alternative or diversion sentencing for people facing their first prosecutions. Usually, conditional release lets a person opt for probation rather than trial. After successfully completing probation, the individual's criminal record does not reflect the charge.

Mandatory minimum sentence: When someone is convicted of an offense punishable by a mandatory minimum sentence, the judge must sentence the defendant to the mandatory minimum sentence or to a higher sentence. The judge has no power to sentence the defendant to less time than the mandatory minimum. A prisoner serving an MMS for a federal offense and for most state offenses will not be eligible for parole. Even peaceful marijuana smokers sentenced to "life MMS" must serve a life sentence with no chance of parole.

Marijuana tax stamps: This state has a marijuana tax stamp law enacted. This law mandates that those who possess marijuana are legally required to purchase and affix state-issued stamps onto his or her contraband. Cops ketchup with another suspect in pot-plant case

Talk of ripening “tomatoes,” police say, is the latest link to a family accused of growing 112 marijuana plants in the attic of their Shrewsbury home.
Peter Psomadelis, 32, of Worcester, made several phone calls to the Shrewsbury home while serving a six-month sentence in Worcester County Prison for a third-offense drunken driving arrest, police records state.
Detectives who listened to recorded phone conversations said that Psomadelis would speak to a man named Casey about the “tomatoes,” which police believe was a code word for marijuana.
Police arrested Psomadelis yesterday on charges of marijuana possession with intent to distribute, marijuana possession and conspiracy charges. He pleaded not guilty to all counts in Westboro District Court and was held on $20,000 cash bail.
Psomadelis will appear again in court Friday with the Dobbs family — Lori, 44, Alyssa, 18, and Stephen, 17 — and Lori’s live-in boyfriend, Christopher Dowd, 30, who have all pleaded not guilty to the same charges.
The four were arrested after an early morning raid Nov. 17 on their Shrewsbury home where police say they discovered 112 marijuana plants in a makeshift nursery.
