Curious though as to what the plants looked like above the rootline?

Looks pretty good to me. So it must have been just the roots that looked ill.

What is the water temp ?
If you are over 72f Pythium(root rot) starts developing.
I suggest using Hydroguard or Cannazym.Hydroguard being cheaper, but Cannazym has added bonus.
They both(I think but not stated in Cannazym just my guest) contain Bacillus Amyloliquefaciens wich eats up dead roots and helps keeps roots white.
I use HG in my bubblers and faggers(FauxAero using spinners and pump) I have for mothers and it works wonders up to 80f.I'm using original pure blend so it stains the roots a little bit but they are very healthy.
I also use Floranova in flo and sometimes you can't tell if it's rot.

Here's some info I gathered, also some info on Bacillus subtillis contained in HG:

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens:

Interpretive Summary: Rhizoctonia solani, a soilborne fungus, causes pre- and postemergence damping-off of soybean which can reduce seedling stands and yield. Several microorganisms antagonistic to R. solani have been studied for biocontrol of this pathogen including strains bacterial species of Bacillus. Antibiotic production by some bacteria plays a major role in disease suppression and members of the genus Bacillus produce a variety of antibacterial and antifungal peptide antibiotics. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain B94 was used as a biocontrol agent to suppress Rhizoctonia solani and other fungal plant pathogens. The goal of this study was to purify and identify certain antibiotics produced by this strain using chromatographic, mass spectrometer, and other chemical analytical techniques. Three major antifungal compounds were purified from its culture broth. A new reliable method for isolation and purification of these compounds from bacterial broth culture was developed. Identification of the antibiotics produced may improve our understanding of the mechanism involved in this and other biocontrol systems. This research will be of primary interest to other researchers studying antifungal compounds.

Bacillus subtilis history(cool!): https://www.rense.com/general4/bac.htm

Bacillus subtilis
Organism Type: Bacteria
Description: Bacillus subtilis , a gram-positive harmless bacterium, is capable of producing endospores resistant to adverse environmental conditions such as heat and desiccation and is widely used for the production of enzymes and specialty chemicals.
Spectrum of Control: Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, Alternaria & Aspergillus, that cause root rots & seedling diseases
Mode of Action: Biological fungicide/ antagonist, applied directly to seed. It will grow with root system.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bacillus subtilis
Organism Type: Bacteria
Description: A bacterium that is used as a fungicide on flower and ornamental seeds, and on agricultural seeds including seeds for cotton, vegetables, peanuts, and soybeans.
Spectrum of Control: Suppression of plant diseases caused by such fungi as Rhizoctonia , Fusarium, Alternaria, Aspergillus and others that attack the root systems of plants.
Mode of Action: The bacterium colonizes the developing root system of the plant and thus competes with certain fungal disease organisms. The bacterium competes with and thereby suppresses plant disease fungal organisms such as Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, Aspergillus, and others. The bacteria continue to live on the root system and provide protection throughout the growing season. Use of the fungicide is not expected to harm humans or the environment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bacillus subtilis
Organism Type: Bacteria
Description: Strain QST 713 of Bacillus subtilis- A widespread bacterium found in soil, water, and air. Bacillus subtilis strain QST 713 controls the growth of certain harmful bacteria and fungi, presumably by competing for nutrients, growth sites on plants, and by directly colonizing and attaching to fungal pathogens
Spectrum of Control: Fungi and bacteria that cause scab, powdery mildew, sour rot, downy mildew, and early leaf spot, early blight, late blight, bacterial spot, and walnut blight diseases.
