Mothers

With mothers' day approaching it only seems right to discuss mothers.
How long can you keep a mother a mother?
Is it best to pinch top and also keep mother under a certain height? Pictures I see of mothers they aren't very tall and
are bushy.

The reason they are shorter and bushy is cause they are being topped. If ya want moms taller just don't top to often. You can keep mothers for years but the older a plant gets the more prone it can be to having problems. There is debates on gentic drift after so many years of taking clones off of clones.

Thank you! is it better to let mothers grow tall, or doesn't matter.
Do you keep them on 12/12 light indefinitely?

It doesn't matter it depends on the floor space you have and mother need to be atleast 18 to 24 hrs aday of light. You don't switch 12/12 untill flowering mothers stay in veg state only because of lighting sched.

No you dont keep a mother on 12/12 indefinitly, its a mother plant that you take cuttings off of, if you put it on 12/12 its gonna flower and you cant take cuttings anymore. Keep it on a 18/6 or 20/4 schedule always

I agree with moonie, however for certain strains like 99---18/6 will show some pre-flowers...it is harder to take clones from her when she is in pre-flower. 20/4 is the way I go. Also, I do not keep a mother (1 single plant) forever I take clones from her then once they are rooted I throw her into flower and make a new mom off one of the clones I have rooted.

A good mother will be at least 2 months old, and I have seen one mother that was 14 years old (I was told). It was pretty gnarly looking. Stalk looked like tree bark, and it was only about 16-20" tall.

I keep 24 mums at the moment in soil under 2 36W fluoros. I keep them for about 12 months. They supply ample clones for my SOG style of growing.

I feed them with a seaweed extract solution and the light regime is 18/6. Prior to cloning I feed them and get them well hydrated for about 1 week. At this time I also put a 430W HPS over them to give them a boost.

I use the HPS because I just happen to have a spare one lying around. A MH would probably be a better light spectrum for this veg stage.

Thanks. Oh mother....this is so complicated. So many things to get right.
I've got a bunch o' mothers (ha ha) and I hate to take them out of the sun
but grew them from seed and its too hard to keep doing that imo so I'm going
to keep trying to clone (don't read my sad posts under clone killer).
I guess I can't sleep with my mothers anymore if they have to be on 18+ hours
of light. Dang-love to smell them.
Am I a dork? (this is a female writer in case you are wondering).
