Quick Update
Soaked seeds (starting Tuesday evening, 10/25) for 24 hours and then put them into cups of perlite Wed evening, 10/26.
Since I don't know how easily these germinate and it's the first time in a while that I've germinated this many seeds of a single variety at once, I am running an experiment. 5 of the seeds are in plain perlite and 5 of the seeds have about 1/2 teaspoon of vermiculite mixed in just around the seed. The vermiculite will hold a bit of extra moisture in the area right around the seed, helping to soften the shell so the seedlings can make their way out. I'll keep track to see if the vermiculite makes a difference in speed of germination. The cups are inside of a Rubbermaid tub with some water to keep the humidity high. No lights as yet. The tub is on top of a heating pad set on low which is maintaining the temp inside at 80-82F; humidity is 95% (I have a digital thermometer/hygrometer inside). The cups also have plastic wrap over the top to hold humidity inside, though it probably isn't needed at this point; but once the first seedling pops up, I'll turn on lights and the exhaust fan and the plastic wrap will help protect the rest of the seeds until they sprout. The water used is RO water with a TDS of 10. pH was adjusted to 5.7 and I added 5 drops of Superthrive to a gallon of water. If these germinate the same as most seeds, I should start seeing seedlings pop up Friday evening. I also put 4 other seeds in to germinate at the same time - these are a cross of Cinderella 99 and Apollo 11. I've heard lots of good things about these, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to try them for myself. I'll update again once I have some seedlings to photograph. |

Initial results of germination experiment - 4 seedlings with vermiculite popped up Friday evening. None of the seeds without vermiculite are showing yet.

go ambre its your birfday uh uh go ambre uh uh go ambre gyeah ![]() Quote:
also , don't forget to fan the container with the lid or a portable battery operated fan jumpoff thang a few times a day, the risk of fucgi attack is highest at this rH. throw a heat pad from the pharmacy underneath the stragglers, make sure it's got a towel between the mat and the containers though as they can get real hot real quick if you're not careful.. look for one without an automatic shutoff (if they make those) if not maybe you can over ride it, otherwise it will shut off every hour or so. don't put heavy weight on these things either as risk of fire is increased, its bad enough we're using them with plants/water ![]() good luck hon cj |
