clay pots...

I have been playing hell with this new batch of seedlings. I've had horrible temperature problems (which should be fixed when my AC unit gets here) and what seems like nutrient problems and moisture problems. I just transplanted from 4" to 6" clay pots, because they were available. I didn't have enough of the 6" pots so I used 2 plastic pots. I watered all of the plants evenly, and for obvious reasons, the soils in the clay pots registers moderately moist, while the soil in the plastic pots registers very wet. This seems to be the reason I have to water them so often (sometimes twice a day), though I could be wrong.

Are these pots wicking away the water and evaporating it before the plants can get to it? If so is it too traumatic to the plants to transplant twice in 3 days?

Secondly, what besides over fertilization will cause leaf tips to turn yellow and die? Is this linked to my water problem? I use enriched potting soil, and because of the symptoms, I don't add any fertilizers, and the plants still show overfert symptoms.

I've sank too much money into lights and air control for some dirt to screw this up.

Thanks everyone.

Your clay pots are def making you water more frequently! Clay is very porous and allows air to penetrate very easy.....where plastic does not.

And, IMO, it is pointless to transplant from a 4" container to a 6" container. Roots will fill that up in no time flat. But I would wait a week to transplant again.

What type of soil are you using? Store bought?

Starting with a high quality medium is very important. If you can find ProMix BX or HP, I highly recommend a bale.

I'm using Jungle Grow enriched organic potting mix. I hate it. I've had nothing but problems with it. I just ordered that ProMix BX. I'll transplant all the kids to 1gal. plastic pots when it gets in in a week. What nutrients will I need to suppliment with that Promix?
