HID, CFL, LED, PLL, T5, T8... Avoid halogen and incandescent.

What lights do you want to use? The ones that will work for your plants. Whether you're growing for fun or for cash, you need to watch your plants to see how they respond to what you use. Why? Because all plants are different, just as all growers are different.

Though some growers are going to tell you their preferences, really, all that matters is that you get your plants a full spectrum of light, just as they would get outside.

Think about growing in that way - if the plant would get that nutrients or that light outside, then you're choosing the right stuff for your grow. If the plant wouldn't get that naturally, you might not want to use it.

Exception: Adding more nutes is going to boost plants beyond what they could achieve outside. Ah, the powers of technology.
