70watt hps & no ballast

Noobie question...
I was looking at lowes at some bulbs just checking their stock when i ran into the 70watt hps bulb with the standard medium sized socket. i came to wonder, what would happen if i bought one and screwed it into a standard socket with no ballast. i understand that a bulb of 250+wattage would require a ballast and ofcoarse a 70 should use a ballast but since it is of such low wattage, would would happen without the ballast?

Has anyone used a 70watt hps bulb with no ballast?
Did the bulb still work?
How long did the bulb last?
Does it change the light intensity?
Is there a serious fire hazard for some reason?
Any information would be nice to have please.

Thanks everyone.

My guess would be if that worked other people would be trying it and I have never heard of doing any such thing. If you try it stand back before you flip the switch.
I wouldn't even try it if it were me, you can get a whole 70watt light cheap enough from https://www.e-conolight.com/Product/E...ber=E-HC1H071Z

If you read the back of the box, it will tell you what type of socket to put it into. If you put it into something that it's not supposed to be in, it just won't turn on.

it will not work.
hps's dont work off standard 120v at the socket.
you will usually have something close to 300v at the socket after the ballast is hooked up.
hps's come in 2 base sizes (sockets)
medium base (smaller)
mogul base (larger)

Voltage isn't determined by the socket. As long as your ballast, cord and outlet are all 240, you're OK.
