Don't think Ray Bans offer enough (any?) UV protection. I would highly recommend side-shielded cutting glasses/goggles. #5 lenses are much like dark sunglasses and as long as you don't look directly into the arc of the lights you will be fine. You can pick these up at any welding shop CHEAP (a helluva lot cheaper than Ray Bans, man). Skiing glasses/goggles might be OK but welding/cutting lenses have their light filtering capabilities measured and certified, they are inexpensive insurance for your eyes.

I belive you were supposed to quote the guy with the raybans and not me bud lol. I was saying if he has to, use the raybans rather than nothing for now untill he can find his way to the local work wear store.

Holy jesus! I just started growing vertically last month...I guess I wasn't fully aware of the level of danger to one's eyes when using a bare bulb. I don't think I've done any noticeable damage yet, but rest assured I will be investing in proper goggles and/or working under a green bulb from now on.

This is probably the single most important piece of safety information regarding cannabis growing I've ever seen! Forget stickied, this should appear in giant bold letters at the top and bottom of every page automatically.

You can get shielded welding goggles real cheap on Amazon.some for less than $10. I just picked up a pair because my vision has been having a rough time since growing vertically. This thread is very important when it comes to growing vert. Your health should always be your first concern.

Using two pairs of sunglasses really didnt help but thats because they were light lenses(Oakley Polarized brown and Smith Black.)

Hey real ting, i just got some shade 5 and they seem to be perfect. Any darker and the i wouldnt be able to see details. You may still be able to go lower but i like the shade 5 since i can accidentally look at the bulb and suffer no problems. I wouldnt trust shade 3 by themselves, maybe if you were wearing another pair of sunglasses.

I just got a set on amazon for $10 that are more like a scuba mask to make sure light doesnt get around. I can also flip up the lenses a which is great for looking at details. This also allows me to block the light by tilting my head.

ANYONE WHO IS GROWING VERTICALLY AND IS NOT PROTECTING THEIR EYES IS MAKING A HUGE MISTAKE!!! TAKE CARE OF YOUR EYES BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT JUST GROW BACK!!! A $10 INVESTMENT CAN VASTLY PROTECT YOU!!!
