how many plants 600 w
going to try one lamp vertical(600w) and keep the the other 1200w horizontal in a tent as an experiment. How many 2gal sites would be best for vertical lamp? flipping at around 12". thanks

Well some pieces of your puzzle are missing to me... like are the plants bushy or xmas tree like, whats the size of the space you're working with, do your plants stretch a lot, temps and ability to cool the bulb?
What I do know is your 2 gal pots are probably about 10" in diameter. Now you have two options really, going with a square approach where a couple plants are a little more privileged and the ones in the corners get a little less light, or you can go with the circle method. The circle method you can do a Vscrog pretty easily, but I always suggest K.I.S.S. when trying something for the first time. In a compromise between number of plants and luminosity of said plants, I generally keep them 1.5 feet away from the 600w bulb. Soooo, we're talking about roughly a 5'x5' square that you can surround them by, each plant taking up 10" makes it 19 plants. The best way to utilize going vertical though, is to use multiple tiers or "levels". By adding a shelf above that space and adding another 600w, you would have light going from the top bulb to the bottom layer and the bottom layer to the top, also using your square footprint most effectively (from a spacial standpoint). Hope this helps and post any followup Q's if you want.

Thanks for the great reply. tent is 4.5ft wide so i will work wall to wall.
so a three foot diameter around the bulb and enough plants to go around it sounds good. Should probably use a more sat influenced strain to get enough height in stretch correct? Basic diesel vs hp x deep chunk currently. v scrog would be a funnel like canopy concept correct? |

16 2 gallon pots or 25 1 gallon or 12 3 gallon is what I have fooled around with. Hope that helps at least a little. Peace

I would put a shelf in there and put a second set of plants positioned between the plants on the lower level if plant numbers aren't a concern. You will have fewer empty spots in your canopy that way.

As for the type of strain you want to you, what you really need to decide on is a couple different things. 1) Are you doing a V-scrog? If yes, then you want something that is an inbetween strain that you can weave in and out of the holes in your scrog. 2) If not doing a V-scrog, how long do you want to veg for? The whole point of going vertical is to create more of a surface area of green vegetation while using light in a more efficient manner. So, if you veg something like Deep chunk up to a good height, it will have a lot of dense vegetation in which all of it will produce buds, where as a pure sativa will stretch a lot and leave gaps in your canopy. So do you see what I mean, when we want to fillout our vertical canopy to the fullest extent and maximize all the light that is shined upon the plants? This is the beauty of growing, you can do it however you want and get the same results, so long as you see what the end goals are.

Seems a circle would be most inefficient. since they are in pots, you can just pack 'em in there (space 'em a bit to your desire) and rotate them if your middle ones get to stretch a bit more then the others. this way you can maximize your space and keep 'em relatively even as you grow.

I believe as another person said on another thread in the vert section here. To calculate a circular space is 2 x 3.14 (pi) x width x height. So 2 x 3.14 x 3 x 4 (plant height) = 75.36 square feet of vertical plant canopy for circular. 20 (number of plants) x 4 (plant height) = 80 square feet of vertical plant canopy for square layout. As you can see the math shows they are about equal. With the vscrog, you could probably use less plants if you can fill in the space well. Just to reinforce why vertical is better: 4.5' x 4.5' = 20.25 square feet for the same space if he was doing a flat garden.
