When a friend pulled out a similar one of these to smoke with years ago I said, "What the hell is that!?" After trying it, I made a variation for myself. I still don't know what to call it... I mean is it a bubbler? Is it a hookah? I dunno...

I like how the inner diameter of the brass bowl fits a nice size joint (and there's a lip on the inside to keep it from falling through). Roll one a bit bigger than a cigarette. I use a rolling machine and overpack it pretty firm, enough so you couldn't draw through it easily just using your mouth. I guess you could stick the whole joint in it and pass it around, but I cut it flush across the top of the bowl, leaving a pellet size piece inside.



Anyway, when I showed this to some seasoned smoker friends recently, they suggested I post it so here it is...

I made this with a few items from the home improvement store, namely a small brass fitting, some plumbing epoxy, a soft rubber stopper and a length of hose. Total cost was about $10.

I also used a Gatorade bottle, a plastic stirrer and a disposable pen.



If you're handy I'm sure you can see how it's assembled, but for those who appreciate details...

I drilled a ½" hole in the bottle cap and forced the flared side of the brass fitting through the top of the cap with a pliers.
Btw, brass is nonreactive and there's no metallic taste imparted to the herb.



For the stem I used a 6½" length of vinyl hose (⅝" outer diameter, ½" inner diameter) and forced it over the flared end of the fitting. (Run some HOT water through the hose to straighten it if it's curved.)



I sealed the gap between the fitting and the top of the cap with the plumbing epoxy. You could use high-temperature epoxy, but this stuff is rated to 250°F (121°C) and works fine. Apply it according to the package instructions... It's just like playing with clay, only you use just a pinch...



I used a forstner bit to make a clean hole in the bottle for the rubber stopper, but a sharp utility knife does a fine job too... What? I love my tools, ok?
Just be careful and remember you want an airtight fit!



I drilled two holes in the rubber stopper, one for the mouthpiece and one for the carb.
For the mouthpiece I used the body of a pen. I knocked out the disc at the end with a nail and twisted that end into the top hole in the stopper. (Even simpler if the pen has a removable cap at the end.)
I used a plastic stirrer for an insert to keep the carb clear. I got it through the hole in the stopper with a drop of vegetable oil and sliced off the ends with a utility knife.



When everything's assembled, make sure it's airtight and let the epoxy cure (1 hour).

For me, the rolling machine does a neat uniform job every time and that works for me. (Best $2 I ever spent.) It might take a couple tries to get the size right if you're rolling by hand. (A PITA for me.)

Anyway, put some water in the bottle, load the bowl and take a rip. I use the lighter to cover the bowl when I clear the smoke from the bottle.

Be warned if you're a light smoker (like me), the first couple tokes can be dense!! A bear-size friend sucked down a whole pellet and proceeded to cough his nuts up for 5 minutes. ('course it was good herb!)

I forgot to mention some things I noticed using this...

I know how this is gonna sound and your mileage may vary, but weed seems to last longer. An ounce would last me and the wife 5 - 6 weeks in a glass pipe, but with this we go 8 - 9 weeks. Best guess is the compact densely packed bowl gives a more concentrated toke.

If that's possible, I think it would explain why I notice the effects come on faster with just one toke on this.

Honestly, trying to find a scientific explanation for this makes my head hurt, so I'll leave it to the more gifted folks to chime in.

Oh, cleaning the mouthpiece and bowl is easy with Q-tips and isopropyl alcohol. The bottle can be replaced when it gets too funky, but I clean mine with alcohol and an old toothbrush. (One less bottle in a landfill.)

are you sure the epoxy is safe? and i heard from many people that brass is not safe but is more tolerable than say copper, and i also have made something like this ^^. I told a mini gatorade bottle G2 i think and like a gravity bong cut a hole in the top for a metallic bowl will hit in then i seal this with hot glue gun, and then i mkae a tin foil bowl that went down about a thumbs lenght, i would store extra weed in the tin foil while i smoked oiut of bowl and i would resinate the weed, anyways i had a hole cut in it just for a choke and then i had a fish tank hose hooked up to inhale from. i think my contrabtion is bad ass and yes you get huge rips of it. Yes, the epoxy is safe.

The brass is safe, too. From what I've read about brass, it should be more yellow or gold-like than orange. (More zinc, less copper. It's the copper that messes with the taste.) Even if I could find a stainless steel fitting I'd be hesitant to use it because in my experience it's possible for some iron alloys to impart a nasty taste to the herb.

Having met 3rd base in person i can assure you nothing would be further from the truth my good man. It is unusual to see on ICM though, you might want to write ROOR on the side with a sharpie .
