The Czech government has ordered the decriminalization of marijuana to allow for the possession and cultivation of small amounts of the plant starting on January 1, 2010. They have finally settled upon the amounts of marijuana that would be decriminalized.

The Czechs were recently announced to be the biggest consumers of marijuana in Europe (22% of the population consumes cannabis). Coincidentally they're also the biggest beer drinkers in Europe. Must be that "Bohemian" culture... Now Prague will really rock with less of a worry about getting popped for a joint.

The interim Czech government, led by chief statistician-turned-Prime Minister Jan Fischer, Monday took another step towards making casual marijuana smoking a worry-free affair.
Fischer’s cabinet defined what constitutes “small amounts” of cannabis for personal use, clarifying the country’s new penal code that from next year decriminalizes cultivation and possession of the plant by individuals.
As of Jan. 1 ordinary Czechs can grow up to five marijuana plants or have several marijuana cigarettes in their pockets without fear of criminal prosecution. Previously what constituted a small amount was not specified and the police and courts loosely interpreted the penal code case by case, often resulting in incarceration of home growers.

The government’s approval of a table specifying what amounts of drugs are permissible is a vital part of the country’s new penal code that was last year approved by both houses of parliament and in January of this year was signed into law by President Vaclav Klaus. Without the just-approved table of amounts that will be used by Czech police, the January decriminalization of the drug would be difficult to judge by courts and investigators.
The plant still remains illegal, however, though from the new year possession of five or less plants is merely a misdemeanour, and fines for possession will be on par with penalties for parking violations.
The Czech decision is in sync with the country’s liberal, Dutch-like social attitudes and laissez-faire approach to civil liberties.

There is also an interesting lifestyle footnote: Czechs are Europe’s biggest drinkers of hops-infused beer and are also the continent’s leaders in smoking pot.
Czechs consume 320 pints of the golden brew per person annually. Also 22% of Czechs between the age of 16 and 34 smoke cannabis at least once a year, according to a recent report by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction.
There may be a botanical reason behind the Czech enthusiasm for the vices.
Hops, a thumb-sized, bulbous, leafy green flower which is used to give beer its bitter taste, and the similarly shaped, sized and colored cannabis flower are the two sole members of the Cannabaceae family of plants.
Czech decriminalization of small amounts of cannabis possession does not, however provide greater clarity to the country’s policy on medical marijuana, an issue which is gaining momentum both in Europe, in North America and elsewhere around the globe.
“Konopi Je Lek”, a Czech non-profit organization promoting medical marijuana recently co-founded the country’s first marijuana dispensary in Prague despite there being no medical marijuana laws on the country’s books.
The grand opening of the dispensary on Sept. 28 (The Day of Czech Statehood and the holiday of the country’s patron Saint Vaclav, or Wenceslas), was attended by Prague’s Mayor Dr. Pavel Bem, who is also a physician and proponent of sensible use of the herb.
However since the dispensary opened, Prague police have raided it, hauling away the cannabis meant for patients, and the dispensary is now looking for growers to help restock its supply.
Some Czech courts in some cases make exemptions to current law to allow for medical use and cultivation of cannabis, sparking legal battles.
The murky state of medical marijuana in the Czech Republic is akin to the legal limbo of the plant’s medicinal uses elsewhere in Europe.

Pana acum numai si numai lucruri bune am auzit de cehi, din toate punctele de vedere: cultura, oameni, economie. Tre sa ajung si eu pe-acolo intr-o vizita.. cu prima ocazie..

Recomandarea mea este ca oricine poate , sa o viziteze macar o data . E super ,incarcata de istorie , mie unul mi a placut mai mult ca Budapesta .

Mai multe sute de tineri s-au întâlnit sâmbătă 10 mai (2008), în centrul oraşului Praga, capitala Cehiei, pentru a demonstra în favoarea legalizării marijuanei. Mii de persoane s-au alăturat marşului lor şi au participat la un concert în aer liber, pentru a suţine legalizarea marijuanei. Protestatarii au avut postere inscripţionate cu frunza de canabis, dar şi inscripţii ca Legalizarea este necesară sau Miroase frumos. Mirosul specific al marijuanei a completat atmosfera de la marşul tinerilor.
Întâlnirea de sâmbătă a fost cea de-a unsprezecea, care a avut loc în Praga. Organizatotii marşului au estimat că au participat cel puţin 4000 de pesoane la marşul din acest an.
Organizatorii speră că amendametul la codul penal, discutat acum în camera inferioară a parlamentului ceh, va schimba optica statului în privinţa mai multor droguri. Aceştia spun că noua lege ar trebui să facă diferenţa între marijuana şi drogurile puternice, de risc.

De asemenea se speră într-o anulare a pedepselor pentru cei care consumă sau cultivă marijuana doar pentru uzul propriu.

Poate ca eforturile lor au fost rasplatite dar au si muncit.Eu personal cred ca avem multe de inteles din toate acestea.

Yep sint de tras invataminte clar . Problema pe care o vad eu in Ro e de mentalitate a populatiei .Este invechita (mentalitatea) ,lipsita de informatii si reticenta la chestii noi si necunoscute pe care le catalogheaza repede ca "rele" . Ar trebui niste organizatii care sa faca ceva lobby si sa informeze populatia .
Au inceput sa apara o gramada de "spice" shops se pare ,ceea ce e un pas inainte oricum ,poate mai deschide ochii unora macar in mare . Decit sa fumezi ceva ce habar n ai ce e ,sau sa iei o pastila de pe strada care iar poate fi orice ...as cauta alternative .
Insa ..e greu se pare sa gindeasca lumea , cred ca singura noastra sansa e EU .

Da man am auzit. Multe tari o sa se uite acuma din 2010 la cehia sa vada cum functioneaza acest experiment si daca e reusit multe tari din europa o sa descrimanalizeze.Si oricum acest forum este un prim pas spre legalizare,Prima data e nevoie de groweri,Sa nu mai fie nevoia de a aduce iarba din alte tari.Cat despre sistemul actual de a combate drogurile este clar ca nu functioneaza nu mai are nici un rost real sa fie continuat.Ori cum cine muta kilele este liber numa amaratii care vind cateva gr is prinsi si cei care isi cresc pentru cuonsum propriu cateva plante.Si merita acesti oameni sa stea inchisi printre violatori si criminali???? nu prea cred !!!!!
Cu descriminalizare marijuanei ar scadea mult mai mult numarul traficantilor decat cu lupta asta a lor care nu da roade.

Ehhh daca ar fi fost plantatii peste tot sunt sigur ca ar creste numarul oamenilor care sa fie pro.
Poporul daca nu stie despre ce e vorba, trebuie educat!.Sznake are mare dreptate cu OVERGROW.
Ar fi cel mai important pas spre legalizare .MAI Multi adepti . mai multi adepti devine usor usor mai multa presiune si in final ce ar trebuie sa fie o legalizare.
