Lightbulb What do you think of my Pentagon idea?

Thinking of trying something like this out... Its just 5 10" wide simple wood shelves put in a pentagon with 2 1000w lights in the middle. Total height of the room is 9 feet. The individual shelving units could also have a mesh screen nailed to the part that faces the light to scrog. Also considering putting at least one shelving unit on wheels to roll out of the way for maintenance. The black squares represent the actual size of 2gal grow bags. The whole room is 7' square.

Concerns are mainly drainage, the idea was to hand water coco like i've done before with great results.

What do you think?

Damn, there's a man who has the hang of Google Sketch Up !

Been planning a similar thing myself, the wheels seem like a good solution to a common problem, access, but you will have to secure those pots well on the moving part ! I am planning on making my first effort with stainless steel 2" weldmesh walls, leaving the rest very flexible, yet giving good air circulation and maintainability.

I have been thinking through a few different medium/delivery methods for mine, Coco in pots or similar is a major route, but drainige is problematical, having much standing water around tends to lead to humidity and rot problems. I have some 6" layflat uPVC hose I may stuff into vertical tubes, or even, just simply direct pots bottoms into slots in the tube to drain them away from the garden.

Re your choice of hexagonal, why not go octagonal and get a rounder, more even garden for a little bit more trouble at the begining ?

+ Are the 1K's too far apart, would for example a 600W MH in the middle make the ladies happier ?

i dont see an advantage in being pentagonal rather than hex or octagonal either. except you have to make less sides i guess

I dunno...it is less sides hah. Never seen a pentagon grow...I could say its g13 government shit.

Anyway, the measurements all look pretty decent. Im just gonna brainstorm on the drainage thing I guess. The room wont be needed for a few months so I'm still in planning stages up till then.

Hey man you could drill a hole in the bottom of your pots throw a grommet and straight barbed connector in them, and then drill a hole directly under the pot for the fitting to fit through. You can then run some guttering underneath it to catch the runoff, or use a T to go into the bucket. Be a little harder as you would have to sit the bucket on the shelf before you put fitting in, and then just run some vinyl tubing to each T. Been thinking of something similar lately but I want to put the shelves on a angle towards the light. GIG

Hi mate,

not sure if you have seen heath robinsons wooden racks, but the pots are slightly tilted which enables you to drain away into guttering so you can drip feed or whatever... Here's a pic

Also check out crunch bubbles thread in this forum, he has some trays he made that drain into pvc pipe, the plants are not tilted

Was about to mention that you need tilt but shhh beat me to it, tho im sure its more a weakness in google planner than it is with your knowledge. Vertical grow systems are always a good idea, IF you have the ceilingspace and the right strain.

Only advice i could give about the system is that you should try to keep it simple, dont use pots if you can use pvc tubing instead etc. There will be alot of parts and screws that will fuck this up in the end so keep it simple. Also google has some nice videos and such that might inspire a better construction

is that enough room to grow a large enough root zone?
