Need tips for macro shooting

Hello to everyone, I got a simple pentax optio e70L 10.1megapixels:
I'm looking for some basic tips on macro shooting, I wanna get good pics of my plants but always got problems with over lighting or when lights are off with the flash making everything too white&shiny, I really know next to nothing about photography.. thanks!

Irie...Welcome to IC ....if you google a phrase such as "marco image tips" you will come up with a wealth of starter information. I still do this quite often. If you can show us some pix of what you are able to accomplish now we can give you some pointers...DD

I think the easiest way to get a marco for me is

a good balanced light source. not too much orange not too much blue

stay far enough away that you have to zoom in

hold your breath, or get a tripod when you shoot

practice

Thanks you , I tried searching, and I'm usually good with google but I coudln't find really nothing viable on how to improve macro shooting, my biggest problem is the light I think, lights on\off, flash on\off, I never get what I want.. here are a few pics:

They always look shiny.. no matter what I try..

Irie...I don't want to offend you new friend but those would not be considered macros so I don't know what to tell you on how to improve them. I'll look online at your camera and lens....Here is what I refer to as close up...this I do not consider macro although many may. DD

OK Erie I went to Pentax.com and looked at the specs for your camera..I'm sorry to say you will never get good macros with that model unless you buy an extra lens and I don't know if they make one for it. You might achieve good close ups as it has enough pixels but you would have to use a tripod and zoom in as close as possible with the camera as close to the subject as possible. Then some sort of external lighting would need to be used or an off camera flash. Good luck ..happy shooting..and keep shooting..experiance is the best teacher and there is no cost of film so it's free...DD

Wow thats close hehe, that as close as I can get without things going blur, even with "macro" mode on, at least I can feel good about myself with the camera being the problem and not me :P, thanks anyway guys.

Irie try setting your camera on a desk as close as you can focus to the subject, also on the desk, that way you'll have no camera shake. Set the auto timer to take the image.DD

Hope you don't mind me asking this in your thread Irie, it's along the same topic.

Hello Doobieduck, I was hoping you could tell me how many cm is the focal point in that picture? I'm looking into getting a camera for macros and the ones I'm looking at are 6.5cm on up.
