Light placement

G'Day,
i recently read someware that, if you have a rectangular garden, it is important to position the longest side of the reflector parallel to the shortest side of your garden.
could someone please explain the theory behind this.
Kind Regards,Father Time.

It's because of the way the reflector spreads the light across. You will see when you plug up your light.

HID bulbs throw very little light from their ends. There are PL reflectors that work best in a rectangle and Midi reflectors that work best in a square setting or you can go with a bare bulb hung vertically instead of Horizontally and add an umbrella shaped reflector to minimize light loss.

That's great. would you say that it displaces the light more efficiently than a regular reflector does?

I can usually decipher things pretty well, but you've got me here. The longest side of the reflector? What if your using an octagonal parabolic like a vertizontal? And what is this shortest side of the garden? You want to keep the longest length of a rectangular fixture running the same way as the length of the garden, but what if the fixtures square?Really I could give a rats ass lol,I'm just fuckin around but it is in need of clarification.
