well you know how I feel about taxes,I feel taxing cannabis goes against my morals juxtaposed against the corruption of our federal, state goverments thru political action campaign money entrenched bureaucracies engaging in propaganda, conflicts of public interest.

If i buy a pack of joints at 7-11, then I don't mind paying taxes...or taxing the profits of said company making the joints for 7-11.

If I grow my own...no tax. Just like I don't pay taxes for my orange tree.

Hmm, so I've got to choose? Can't do it, I'd vote yes for both. Hope for the no tax, but understand that in pragmatic reality it doesn't have the proverbial snowball's chance of passing.

Who wants to take the other side of this bet? the bet is, if both a non-tax and tax Prop make it to the ballot, that the vote ends up split because the no tax contingent won't vote for the other, the majority of Californians vote against the status quo, but that the status quo wins because all of those on the other side vote no on both. It is the path we're on now.

edit: I changed my mind and voted 'tax'. I definitely prefer to see that we make progress rather than shoot ourselves in the foot over some misplaced dogma.

I feel as if most folks are willing to let the gov't tax cannabis because they think it will further along the legalization movement, maybe this is so. I wonder if most people realize that these are excise taxes(like those on tobacco and alcohol) we are talking about rather than sales tax. Excise taxes are often called "sin taxes" because they are placed on abusive subsances and activities to "protect" people from these vices with high costs while the gov't reeps the benefit. These type of taxes continue the taboo placed on cannabis, lumping it in the same catagories as alcohol, tobacco, and prostitution. The taboo stigma is not the only problem with excise taxes. Has anyone read about the meeting in Massachusetts(10/14/09 I think) where the state had a discussion about legalizing cannabis for recreation, they want an excise tax of $250 an ounce. If states hit cannabis with taxes like that how are the producers supposed to make a living, they end up like the rest of the farmers in america, BROKE. I think the gov't would stand to make plenty off of sales taxes as it is, just try to imagine the amount of commerce by legalizing cannabis for recreation. The US doesn't place excise taxes on medicinal plants and herbs of any other sort such as valerian, tulsi, gotu kola, likewise there aren't excise taxes on fruit and vegetables, so why cannabis?
Sales tax? sure; Excise tax? No

PEACE

I feel like if they're going to tax it for medical purposes, than all medication should be taxed just as heavily. (won't happen) If it's all out legalization than it should be no different than the tax on alcohol and tobacco. Perhaps you have to pay a fee to be able to grow and resell it . I don't know tough question, the taxation of it will certainly bring in more income for the government, but I do not feel it should be taxed extremely high like Massachusetts was considering.
