what is the best way to turn food scraps into tasty soil?

im thinking worm bin. going to start trying to cut down on trash in the household. 7 guys in one house... anyway, surely a lot of you guys use your own compost to grow veggies or whatever you please. what does your setup look like?

i'm also trying to get a worm bin started. i think worm castings are god's gift to gardening they are clearly #1 in my book....#2, and i think this one is overlooked or underestimated, rabbit doo doo. it is the next best thing to WC. and in some ways it is better than WC...i used to have 5 rabbits and i would get about 5-7 gallons of poop from them evry week, it would take a nice sized worm farm to get that...also rabbbit poop wont burn your plants either, you can plant directly in a pot of poop...man i cant wait to get my rabbits back

btw, if you do decide to get some bunnies, you can actually start your worm farm directly underneath(worms apparently love rabbit poop). it does help to separate the urine via some angled screen under the cage to redirect the poop but not the urine. also, they tend to urinate in the same place every time, so that could help you separate it as well

well its nice to know if i start a worm bin, i could get a bunny and i would have a good spot to pull all his poo. why does bunny poo work better than other poos? i heard chicken poo is also good. ive also heard to steer away from dog and human poo. but then my brother recently told me some guy he met grows MJ straight out of his own outhouse poo. so i dunno.. what have you heard about other poos? also, im not following what you said about urine.

rabbit poo wont burn your plants, as far as other poos, i think it has to do with the fat and proteins in the poo. besides, with rabbits and worms you wont need other poos. chicken, bat, cow and horse manure can be too hot and burn your plants, the only poos i know of that wont burn your plants and can be used fresh are worm, rabbit and goat. what i meant about separating the urine from the poop, is to have a peice of screen under the cage, where the poop will roll to one area and the urine will just fall through....that way you just collect fresh dry poops. another word of advice, buy an old blender off ebay or at a garage sale and use it to chop up the poop, they get really hard when they dry.

Horse manure can be weedy. Whatever comes out of the horse isn't well digested and looks a lot like what went in. You will get a lot of timothy or alfalfa seeds germinating with horse poop.
Cows have 4 stomachs. When they poop, it's a finished product. Always been a big fan of cowshit. Getting unbagged cow poop can be an issue depending on where you live.
Chicken poo is notoriously hot and can burn crops unless very well composted.
Rabbit poop is good stuff, rabbits finish a lot earlier than the other mentioned animals.
If I was starting up I'd go with a few laying hens. The poop has to be turned, usually needs watering as chicken manure is dry and dusty, and takes some time to cool down, but is really pretty primo shit. Have a few piles to allow time for one to cool down while you're adding to the newer one. Plus, you get fresh eggs, and if fertilized an eating cockerel now and then.

i do agree with fishhead, chicken poop is really good stuff, but like he also said it is very hot. that being said i will stick with the rabbits, and besides, have you ever eaten smoked rabbit? and yes this is a shitty conversation, but in a good way...good luck.

Wonderful. Yes I am a master scatologist. Time is your buddy with any type of composting. I always thought that given enough time a good pile of shit could compost up a two by four.
And with a compost pile you can throw near anything organic into it and help the pile. I toss in leaves, lawn clippings, sawdust, small twigs (no 2x4s yet), small animals(preferably dead ones), just about anything that ever grew, but I stay away from black walnuts because the are allelopathic. OOH, big fucking word Bob.
