You can pretty much guess based on when in the growing season the plant is supposed to flower, and whether you want leaves or flowers:

If you want leaves (lettuce, other greens) keep it on veg cycle.
If it flowers in spring or early summer, keep it on veg cycle.
If it flowers in late summer or autumn, put it in the bloom box.

Obviously if you're monocropping a vegetable, you want to do some research to find the exact ideal photoperiod.
